WELL I TOOK MY NEW TRUCK DOWN TO THE TEST PLACE AND THEY FAILED MY TRUCK FOR BALL JOINTS BUT PASSED THE SMOG TEST DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MUCHT THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS COST AND HOW HARD THEY ARE TO DO AND THE STEPS ON HOW TO DO THEM IT IS FOR A 91 FOR EXPLORER THANKS JOHN
well i looked in my haynes manuel it looks very easy to replace but it looks time consuming to do but i am very mecanicly inclinded to do it does any one know how long about can i do it in one day taking my time or does it take longer than that
thier are 2 different upper and lower ball joints, you have to see which ones you have, about 30 bucks each. easiest way to do it is to take the rotor off the knuckle. and slide the drive shafts out first, after that pretty self explanitory, get the press for the balljoints, they usually rent it for free 100 bucks deposit, took me and my buddy about 3 hours to do. i have a 92 exploder 4x4, you should also check the u-joints on the front shafts while your doing this. good luck
The time it takes will depend on whether or not the spindle is seized in place or not. On my '92, it came right off, the ball joints pressed out real nice. About 3-4 hours per side. On my '87 BII, I fought with the spindle over three days before I got it off, then the ball joints were so seized in place I fought for a couple of hours trying to press them out (and I was using the good "C-clamp" style press, too).
it took me 6 hours today to do one side the spindle was stuck in place but got it off then the lower ball joint was stuck in place but i took the sawsalll and cut the lower ball joint shaft off and pounded the shaft out the ball joints pressed out nice and pressed in nice and assembly whent togather nice
i was so damn tired after doing this i had to go to bed after all the pounding and stuff and i also broke a 5 lb mallet doing this lol
