When I start driving I can hear a high pitch squeal coming from the front drivers side wheel area. It is hard to pin-point since I am driving. It seems to vary in pitch but only comes on when rolling and remains even if I put the trans in neutral. So this eliminates belts and engine and trans. It quiets down as speed is above 30 mph and once warm, after 3 miles or so. I don't sense any clunking. My initial guess is a wheel bearing. What about CV joints?
What's is invoved in replacing the bearings on the front end of an AWD. Do I need special tools to remove the hub, etc. Can someone email the procedure from their manual to me?
I have the same problem and would like to know also. I was told once it was the power steering but I don't think so since the problem only happens when the car is moving.
ISSUE
Some 4X4 vehicles may exhibit a high-pitched "squeal" or "whistle" type noise from the front of the vehicle at speeds from 10 to 40 mph. This noise may be caused by the front halfshaft excluder (dust) seals as they rotate against the inner front hubs. The noise may be more pronounced in cold weather conditions.
ACTION
Install new front halfshaft excluder seals on each side of the vehicle. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
That sounds like my problem. What's an Excluder seal. I've been around cars for a while and that term is new to me. Where is it located and how do I replace it?
I have a 2001 5.0L AWD Explorer with the exact same symptoms. Mine only has 43,000 miles and this is very noticable on very cold mornings or after leaving work on very cold days. It always goes away within a couple miles and is independent of gear selection, engine speed, enigine ON/OFF, etc. It stops when the truck comes to a stop.
Just go into my profile and click on the link to send me an email. You'll probably have to send me your email in that one, as it may not have a reply adress on it. Actually, what I have is the TSB addressing the issue. It's alot of work - I was quoted $240 by the dealer. However, I found the seals themselves online for around $15. I took it to a few other shops back in Virginia and no one had even heard of this problem, yet it seems to be a common thing.
