I too, will be looking for tires this spring.
01 F150 XLT 5.4L OFFROAD 4x4 17" wheels and will be putting the factory size (265/70r17) tires back on it.
I do tow with it and occasionally will be off-road.
I want a tire that will last a long time, handle the towing, good traction and not cause the truck to wander in the wind like the Goodyear RT/S's do now.
Any suggestions on what might work well?
I don't want to spend an arm and a leg for them either.
Thanks in advance,
Jimmy
In response to superrangerman2002, I'm looking for the following in a tire:
1) Mostly highway
2) P265/70R/17"
3) Long lasting tire
4) I do not tow anything
5) I "AM" concerned with Highway noise
6) Want raised white letters
7) Would run 6-ply tires (Am running them now on the 2001 F-1

Thanx,
I got to be honest with you guys, it will be extremely hard to find a 6ply 265/70r17 tire, and not have to pay through the nose for it.
The only one that I know of is the BFG All Terrain......I shelled out 170 per tire plus 10 for Service pkg at Sam's Club. Every where else was in the 185-200 Ball park. (I wasnt going to settle for any thing other than the All terrains....so i just saved up a while longer...)
If your looking for a long wearing, decent traction, low noise tire, IMO, the Micheln LTX M/S is by far the best on the road, expect to pay ~130 to 150 for this tire, I think that this size doesnt have white letters.
My next reccomendation would the BFG Long Trail T/A, 60K milage wty, white letters, and off set tread, (execellent for fighting cuping), all rnd traction, you can pick this tire up for ~117 at Sam's Club.
I have a set of Bridgestone Revos on my SCrew in the size 255/70/16. It is without a doubt the worst set of tires I have ever owned. They ride like they are "rubbery". The truck handles like a fat old lady, they make a high pitched noise at speed, and my gas mileage dropped over 15% . In my opinion, the truck is too heavy for these tires. Might be different with the 17" wheels but these I have are visually smaller in width and height from the factory originals. Only plus, they are great in wet weather.
I had thought about the Long Trail T/A's myself.I know that BFG makes a good tire. That's all that I have ever run on my 88 5.0 LX Mustang since the original Gatorback's (GoodYear) were worn out at 19,000 miles after being rotated every 5000 miles and (believe it or not) Driving it pretty easy. Most of those miles were highway miles too.
My RT/S's are about to the wear bars @35,000 miles. It's not like I do 4 wheel drive burnouts or anything. They lasted as long as they should I guess. They have a treadwear rating of 360 which is about 36,000 miles.

The RT/s should see 50K easily with proper rotations....it's a really good highway tire, it just stinks off road and in winter IMO.
The Bfg Long Trails are OEM on about 65% of newer chebbys, I dunno if that floats your boat, but it says they're a decent product to me. I would have put them on my truck, had I not been able to get my AT's at the lower price through SAM's club.
I've got the Revos and I like them.
RE Long Trails: Just because an OEM selects them as a standard tire is not necessarily an assurance of quality, but more likely an assurance that said OEM is getting those tires for cheap!
Well my GoodYears are not lasting as long as they should and they have been rotated properly and are not cupping badly at all. Worn all of the way across.
I have 17" Revo's on my Expy. I have no complaints. I ran 240 miles on the PA Turnpike last week at an average speed of 80 MPH. I found handling to be at least as good as the Michelin CrossTerrains and LTX M/S I previously used. BTW the LTX M/S is available as white-lettered in 265/70-17. I had a set.

Really?
So what's wrong with getting a quality tire for cheap?
Mfgs dont go down to the local tire shack and buy tires like we do, they buy them in millions. When a mfg buys in this kind of volume, the tire mfg had better have a heck of a track reccord, if they don't its the vehicle mfg that takes the hit, remember Firestone? Do think Ford really wants to take that road again? It will be a very long time before Ford ever puts Firestones on their vehicles in any considerable amount.
When broken down to per tire they will always be cheaper than what Joe sixpack can buy at the local Tires Plus. Does this make the tire bad? Absolutely not.
Are the Revos a good tire....I think that they are a "decent" tire, but for what you pay for them, IMO you could find a better tire somewhere else.
