I bought a 84 LTD that sat in a field for a few years. I replaced the fuel pump, inline filter, and cleaned out the tank but not real good. The engine idles smooth. Accelerating slowly it runs good. With hard acceleration it sputters. And higher than 30 mph it sputters. When I let off the gas it quits sputtering. After a few minutes the engine light comes on. Does anybody have any ideas.
If it's an 84 is it feuly? If it is carbed get it cleaned. The floatbowls are likely slugged up. How did you clean the tank. The only good way is to remove it have it flushed. Also check the ingnition modual. It may need to be replaced.
Woops, I should read more carefully. I saw '88 in the user name I guess. It may be EEC-III for spark control, but I'm not sure if that outputs codes or not. Does the accelerator pump work? I'm not terribly familiar with carburetors, but it does sound like it's a fuel problem.
Sorry guys. I should have added that it is a 84 Cown Vic witha CFI system. My Haynes code book says the 2 digit codes only go back to 1988. It's been a couple of months and I don't remember the one code, but I don't think it had anything to do with the engine. I'll check again. Thanks for the response.
I'm not sure which EEC system I have. I thought it was a Duraspark II. How do you tell? And which EECs will give codes. Anyone familiar with CFI systems?
Dura spark II only controls your spark. It has nothing to do with your fuel. Tell us if it has a regular carburator or injectors. I'm sure you'll find it is just a carb in 1984. I am also sure you'll find it needs to be cleaned in a big time way. If you can't do it yourself find someone who can tear it down and rebuild it for you. Good luck.
P.S. Try a new coil. There cheap and easy to replace.
