JUST TOOK DELIVERY OF MY '02 PSD 250 S/D. IT IS 4X4, AUTOMATIC. IT HAS FACTORY FIRESTONE A/T TIRES WITH A RELATIVELY OPEN LUG PATTERN. MY QUESTION IS......AT 40-50 MPH, I AM NOTICING A SLIGHT RESONATING VIBRATION. I KNOW THE TIRES ARE A LITTLE OUT OF BALANCE FROM THE FACTORY BECAUSE I CAN FELL A LITTLE BUMP AT HIGHER SPEEDS. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A LITTLE VIBRATION/RESONANCE FROM THE TIRES AT THAT SPEED (IT SEEMS TO GO AWAY AT HIGHER SPEEDS, AND SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE LESS NOTICEABLE ON SMOOTH ROADS)? OR COULD IT BE IN THE TORQUE CONVERTER? I AM STILL A LITTLE PARANOID ABOUT THE E4OD BEHIND THE POWERSTROKE. THE TRUCK HAS ONLY 300 MILES ON IT AND THIS VIBRATION IS A CONCERN. THERE IS VIRTUALLY NO VIBRATION AT SPEEDS ABOVE 50 MPH. HAS ANYBODY SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE??? I WANT TO ASK THE QUESTION OF OWNERS BEFORE GOING TO THE DEALER AND GETTING THE RUNAROUND THAT "THIS IS NORMAL", OR "WE COULD'NT FEEL THE VIBRATION" HELP!!!!!!
My 02 SD 5.4 had a vibration that started at 60 mph. It wasn't constant but intermittent and it was felt through the whole truck. It turned out to be the Firestone Steeltex tires were aprox. 5 OZ. out of balance from the factory. The service guy was surprised at how far the tires were out of balance. I am assuming that you checked to make sure the hubs are unlocked? also go for a ride with the service tech when you bring the truck in I did and the guy felt the vibration as soon as we got on the highway so there was no "it's supposed to do that" Babble we so often hear from "Some" service depts.
Thanks for the info, Chuck, I have the same exact tires. Let me ask you, was your vibration a rapid, sort of a growling vibration, or just a shake? Mine is of the growling type, but I did have this same type of vibration on my '97 F-150. I know it is the tires, so it does not bother me as much.......
It was a shimmy the entire truck would kind of wiggle, steering wheel, seat and floor but like I said it would come and go due to the resonance theory I guess. A growl to me would seem to indicate a driveline issue.
