Folks,
I have a 2005 screw with 15,000 miles. I notice a slight vibration at exactly 50 MPH. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be tires? Seems wierd that the vibration only occurs at a specific speed.
Wingset, I just picked up my 05 super crew for the same reson but at 67-71 miles and hour. Before I took it in, I rotated the tires from fornt to rear to see if the tires were out fo balance. The vibration didn't get better or worce but it stayed the same. So, when I picked it up today they said they put it on some kind of off road test. They balanced the tires and the vibration went away. Go figure. I can't but wounder if there was a real problem but they wrote it off on a simple balancing. Oh by the way, the tires are the factory Goodyear Wrangler AT/S LT 275/65R18. If I'm not mistaken, the AT means allterain.
My '05 F-150 4wd. had the same vibration, only at 62-65. Found out one of the front tires was way out of balance. So, I had both front tires balanced and rotated the front to back. The back tires were in balance, and now I have no vibration.
I have the same problem but at 65mph. Then at 75mph it smooths out, its weird. They were just rotated today along with the first oil change at 3500miles, and now it seems the back bounces. Mine are aftermarket I got from a big tire place (les swab), and I had it balance and rotated about a 1000miles after I got them and it seemed to smooth out I didn't pay a whole lot of attention. It was doing the same thing then. Also when I first leave in the morning it seems that for the first 1/2mile it has the same shakes, and then it smooths out. What is the problem? The tires and wheels are 275/55/20 so there is a good amount of rubber around the rim. The tires are Toyo proxes st's if that makes a difference they are a performance all weather tire.
Fella's,
I used to have an 04 scab until I needed more truck to pull the 14K rv. I probably spent more time at Discount tire then I did driving. I put aftermarket wheels and mich tires on it and the problems began.
Discount worked there behinds off to attempt to make thing right. I bet they put over 15 different tires and 3 sets of wheels on my truck. They balanced and road tested till I wanted to puke. I bet if I kept track I spent every Saturday after those wheels/tires at the shop!
All the time I could put the originals back on and the vib would stop.
What I found, and discount as well, was the wheels that are on the truck absolutly had to be hub centric or vibs would occur. The 3 different sets of wheel all used the acorn type lugs which would fight to pull the center of the wheel toward it.
I can't tell you how many times I pulled the wheels off that truck trying to figure out what was wrong. I could jack the truck up and loosen the wheels and then retighten without even rotating them and the vib would change. I found that the best result came when I tightened the lugs slowly in increments as I spun the wheels.
At the end of the day and as the TSB's will discribe the wheel has to be centered around the hub and not by the lug nuts. If I had to guess I would say the any wheel that is not hub centric should not be put on a new ford.
If and when I do get another F150 I will test drive the crap out of it and look, listen and feel for any vibs before I buy. On top of that I will never use aftermarket wheels on another truck again. Although they look good it is not worth the pain.
I just had mine balanced today and they are alot better. All but one were out of balance. The wheels and tires I got I just love. I hated the cheap wheels that came on my STX. The other upper end trims had alot better looking wheel selection, so I will have to have them balanced and rotated every few hundred miles or until it does it again. I forgot to try it at 65, but I was close and didn't feel anything but the road. I think one think that hurts it is the steering on these trucks is very tight and you can feel everything in the steering wheel, well at least mine I can. My tahoe steering is alot more loose and feels like an suv. If it doesn't do it tommorow when is is cold and sat all night than every thing is fine.
