No the E4OD and 4R100 are not the same transmission. They are very similar but not identical. There are some subtle difference in the two. Among the differences are some updated internals like the bearing type center support and a six pinion rear planentary, valve body and solenoid pack and the addition of a turbine sensor on the top of the case.
The 4R100 is slightly stronger due to the revision mentioned above. A 4R100 will not replace an E4OD because of the slight differences in the electronics. Most notably, the addition of the turbine sensor on the 4R100.
