tick, tick, tick

I just wanted to say thanks for everyones input, you guys have been a big help, I have a 92 explorer that i got after my father past away, i put a little work with your help and this thing is better than my 98 astro. its go 110k on it but it moves real good, put new ujoints on the front shafts and the rear drive shaft. new ball joints, and fixed that damn transfer case motor. just waiting it for snow right now, ahh yeahh. One thing keeps bothering me thouhg. when the engine is cold as in just starting up for work this morning, it sounds like a bad lifter tick. but when it gets warm, it pers like a kitten. Could this be the lifter even when it warms and quiets, or could this be caused by something else. could this be what ping is or just loose valves. thanks for your help

i've read over a bunch of posts on this and it just seems to be the nature of the truck after 100k miles... mine sounds like a diesel when i first start it but within 2 or 3 minutes its quite as a church mouse...somone said in one thread it was probably rocker arms and push rods but i dont know...sounds more like lifters needing to build up oil pressure to me....hope this helps!!oh ya.....mine has 213k miles on it too!

Could be a cracked exhaust manifold, the crack can open up a bit when cold to make that noise, then close when the manifold gets hot. I've seen quite a few posts that seem to indicate this.

Might look at the shop note/ or article no. 92-4-12.
Your Ford dealer or parts man should let you see it.
This is from the issue section:
"ISSUE: A fuel line "knocking" noise, which shounds like a bearing/ piston noise, may occur. This noise is more audible at lower ambient temperatures below 45 deg. (7 deg. C). This noise is caused by hydraulic pulsations in the fuel line."
The correction calls for replacing the fuel supply manifold, the fuel line assembly and the gaskets. I decided just to live with the noise. Can't hurt a thing. The cost for the parts was over $400.
Good luck.
