Somethings aren't designed to totally make a profit. You wouldn't consider privatizing the Army or the Navy Would You? Or the U.S. Treasury? The Postal Service like it or not is there for a reason. FedEx and UPS may come and go but the U.S. Postal Service has always been!
FedEx/UPS don't have to deliver a letter in every little far away town.

my buddies parents had to send an antique carousel thingy to someone they had sold it to. to save a couple bucks they shipped Fed Ex....now they had fedex check the packaging when they sent it out...and they sent it insured for 1800 bucks. When it arrived there wasn't a part on it that was still together and fed ex refused the claim because they don't insure antiques.....why'd they sell them insurance on it after knowing what was in the box?

Like J E I am a UPS driver.
J E You must be a newer driver. I agree with most of what you say but... Not every package that we handle gets there on time and undamaged. We handle millions of packages every day. Mistakes can and do happen. Most damages are caused by improper packaging. But he is right that a lot of times vendors say a package has been shipped and it hasn't.
If something is damaged I do NOT note it. It doesn't make a difference as far as claims and I'm not going to lie to my customers and tell them it does. In fact if it's damaged I won't even deliver it.
UPS and fedex air services are comparable. We have an advantage on ground because we aren't owner operators who deliver where and when they want. I knew a home health service place that was waiting for a shipment of medicine. They tracked it to the depot and figured they would get it that day. They waited a full week to get it because they were a little out of the way and the fedex driver didn't want to go out there. We got more of their business.
