i have a 1975 ford f250 with a 390 motor and find myself filling up with gas all the time so i dont run out. I do this because my guage reads empty all the time even when shes full. i have a wire hooked to the top of the float and a ground off of that. The main wire runs up and over the door and i see where it comes out down by my E break handle but from there i dont know where to hook the wire up. Thanks for the help.
Does the guage move at all whent he key is turned on? With the key on, momentarily ground the sender wire - does the guage move? Test sender wire with test light - do you get a dim pulsing light? Do your other guages work?
Take the connection off the sending unit and attach it to ground ( for a short time only).
The needle on the gauge should Pin itself to the right hand side of the gauge.
This means you have a good circuit just that the sending unit won't read it.
Again, unless the float is full of gasoline you need to clean the S/U up or replace it.
You can also put a test light on the wire to the fuel sending unit and see if it flashes with a steady pulse.
on my 79 there is two wires for the sending unit. one at the rear of the frame and one about half way down. when i got my truck the gauge didn't work either. ran new wire from front one and gauge works fine.
My 75 came with dual tanks, switch for tanks near heater control. If you have this, check the inline fuse that is located about where the back of the radio. I think you can see it from under the dash. My wiring diagram shows the sending unit goes directly to the gauge to the voltage regulator mentioned by Mil1ion.
