4x4 Manual Lockout

Simple question....

I was browsing through the threads and noticed people talking about the manual lockout on their front hubs. Do all Excursions have this??? I noticed that my front hubs LOOK like manual lockouts, but there's no writing on them for "Lock", "Unlock", or "Auto" or anything. I also tried turning them by hand but couldn't get them to budge so I just assumed that mine didn't have them.

All have them. (ASSuming yours is stock.)

They get stuck due to non-use. You can disassemble the outer hub and relube them.

Also, sometimes the markings for AUTO and LOCK get worn off. Seems true in your case.

Thanks Monsta! You seem to be correct once again. I went home last night and put some muscle into getting them to turn and they did. Now I just wish they had markings so I could tell if they're locked or in Auto. If my poor memory is correct, turning full clockwise SHOULD be the Auto position so that's what I did. Hopefully that's correct?

Someone else will probably be able to tell you with more accuracy. I'll say that which ever way you turn it reach back behind the wheel and try to turn the halfshaft. If it turns, you have in in the auto position, if not it is in the locked position.

NOW one caveat... My passenger side would always stay locked after I switched it out of 4WD (using the ESOF **** on the dash) I would have to go out and turn the hub back and forth between Lock & Auto while moving the halfshaft too. So the preceding paragraph doesn't always hold true.

Well, that sounded reasonable but it didn't seem to work. No matter which way I turn the lockout, the halfshafts still wouldn't turn. This weekend I'll have to jack it up and see if the tires will spin by themselves.

Thanks for the help though!

Your hubs need to be cleaned and relubed.

The halfshaft should turn by hand when in AUTO position and the 4WD system not engaged.

Wonderful. Time to order a technical manual.

I think I had heard once that these hubs are all once piece units. Is that correct or can they still be disassembled?
