diesel warm up

I'm looking to buy a 2001 psd and was wondering how long should you let them warm up before you drive and are they ok for daily shorter trips like 15mins??

Thanks

Joey

I have no idea as to the short trips in your area, because of the temps, but I use mine for some short trips. I will once in awhile just take it out on the interstate and run for 30 mins to get everything hot and moisture out of engine. I keep my plugged in for 3 hours before I need the truck and I usually let it idle till the fast idle kicks in, and then I leave but I take it easy until the temp guage is up. However take this into account, I am early retired and I am in no big hurry to get anywhere.

You really only need to let it warm up a couple of minutes before pulling away. It's better to warm it up while driving. Just take it easy until your gauge is in the warm area and then you will be fine. Diesels like to be run, but 15 mins. runs are OK, just keep up with the maintenance. I live between to cities that are a 15-20 mins drive either way. My truck has 33k on it and runs like a champ! We do take it on trips, of 1-3 hrs. on a fairly regular basis and she gets up to 20.5 mpg on those longer trips.

I say go for it, but really check the thing out or have a mechanic check it out for you. Good luck!

I have an 01 that is my daily drive. Trip to work is 5 minutes. (5 Km). I don't let it warm up usually unless it is below -30 C. (I'm in Winnipeg) Just keep it around 1500 RPM until the temp registers and below 2000 RPM until in operating range. Short driving like this comes under Severe Duty Use, so change oil often.

Fordblue, mine is an 00' and when it is cold 20 degrees or less i let it warm up for 5 to ten min, especially when it is below zero, remember to plug in. going on 4 years w/100,000 miles and runs like a champ! My truck is an every day truck so 5 min to five hours not unusual, drive like you would any vehicle and enjoy. If you are driving the freeway any period of time at speeds of 70 mph or more, it wouldn't hurt to let your truck idle for about 5 min when you get to your destination to give your turbo a chance to cool down. Just my .02 cents. enjoy

I'm assuming your talking about warm up mostly in the winter...

I usually give my truck 5-20mins depending on the temps outside. I have a remote starter and I would highly recommend one, It's so nice to have in the winter.

Keep in mine the PSD will not fully warm up to normal operating temps untill you drive it on the road, especially in the winter cold...

Yep, change it every 3000 miles.

Lots of short drives on a gas engine craps out the exhaust pipe (condensate) and engine. It won't be long before the gasser starts using oil since it is not operating around optimum temps for long. Just FYI, don't know how it effects the diesel engine. Expected the same? Nobody mentioned it for the diesel so maybe not. Before you drive the short trips a lot, do a search for this.

Congrats and good luck on psd purchasing. Best thing I ever done.
