It's not that hard. I usually give a quick touch up after about 4 hours of use or whenever it starts to grind instead of cut. Takes me 5 minutes. I'm a native Oregonian and taking the saw in for sharpening around here would be like a Texan taking a steer in to get milked..

The trick is to get a file small enough for your saw. I look for one that will fit the radius of the tooth. Most of the ones I've seen at the home centers are too big in diameter and have too course a thread. If you don't wait too long to sharpen, it only takes a couple passes on each tooth to get the edge back.

It shouldn't take much effort or time to cut through any kind of wood. That's probably why I liked my electric - It used to cut better than my 2-strokes grind.

I guess I would be recommending a Gas one for camping, I'm much more of a fan and I like to go light, so I pack a bow saw if I am in charge of firewood, or I just bring some that I have already cut.

We have a Stihl FarmBoss, 029 18" saw, and it sure makes quick work out of most trees.
