Solar Panels

Ok well, I picked up a panel. Its a 1000W 23.4 Volt Unisolar panel.

I was curious what the value of the panel might be, and what a transformer would cost to turn the output into 110V, so its useful.

Thanks

you'll need an inverter, transformers run on AC, and panels output DC

Ok, I just looked on Ebay, and these things are quite valuable.

So, an Inverter, is that it?

I believe a 50 watt, 12 volt panel is around $400. How large is it?

You need a 24 volt inverter. Look on Ebay.

Actually, you probably need to have the panel charge a battery, then power the inverter off the battery. That's what I do for the lights and radio in my utility shed.

Watts=Volts X Amps so you have a (round numbers) 4 amp output. That won't convert much for you into 120 or run anything very long. Usually, those panels are set up in parallel, with 10-20 hooked into the system. Then you can get some use. 1 panel by itself isn't too useful. And then the sun has to be shining!

Sorry-Should have been 40 amps, not 4. But still real marginal to go to 120V.

So how much will the built in inverter put out? You need to know the voltage , cycles, amperage and duty cycle.

I will have to look tomorrow, its in the basement, and I am scared of the dark.

i honestly don't even know if the thing works, i looked at it today, and I don't really know what the stuff means. I am gonna see about selling it, more panels are freaking expensive, more than the electricity that I would use for the rest of my life, seems that way anyway.

Used panels in good condition average about $2 per watt. Brand new run as high as $4 (my parents own an alternative energy business). If you're far from power it's often less expensive to set up your own equipment than it is to have your power company bring a line in. These panels also work out well for people who want a backup power supply, incase of a power outage. But you do have to have a battery bank to use them and you'll need an inverter as well. It can get to be quite expensive.

1000W panel is huge, you could get some good money for it. If you don't need your own private power supply I'd sell it. If you're interested in setting up a self standing power supply check out my dad's site. He's got all the info on it: http://www.windandsolar.com/solarpanels/
