I have a 1998 Explorer with the 5.0 l V8 and AWD. Lately, it's started to knock and ping when accellerating up a hill. What's the most likely cause for something like this?
Does it happen under 2000 RPM, getting less noticable as the rpm's climb? I'm having the same problem. I posted in the 302 forum but didn't get much to go on. The ford dealer and the shop where I get it inspected said it is carbon build up. Have to believe them, as I've cleaned the throttle body and IAC valve and they were pretty cruddy.
I plan on cleaning the MAF and the air temp sensor this weekend. Mine is equiped with the K&N cone filter and I've ordered the Gibson cat back. One thread suggested that the cats where clogged. When I put the cat-back on I may replace the cats at the same time.
I did add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil during the last maintenance, ran that for 1800 miles then changed the oil, it was extreemly cruddy for 1800 miles of driving. So it did it's claim to clean the internals. I will add it again about 1000 miles before the next oil change. Mine has only 42K on it and this has been going on for about the last 15K miles.
