92 Explorer Pinging BAD
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Oct-02 AT 01:49 PM (EST)]My 92 Explorer has been pinging for years. 125K miles now, and the pinging, which used to be only in the winter on really cold days, has now become a year round thing. Seems worst on level road at highway speed and gets better if I accelerate. I've had the knock sensor replaced, but the pinging continues. Different grades of gas don't solve the problem either, just lessen it to some extent. Everything else seems to check out fine. Anybody know how to fix this? Everybody I talk to plugs in the monitor, gets a "good to go" from the computer and scratches their head.

Clean your MAF sensor with throttle body cleaner and if that doesnt do it, check you #5 spark plug (middle one on drivers side). If its fuzzy then you need to tighten the intake manifold.

I didn't have anything on my spark plugs when I tightened the intake manifolds, but tightening the manifold took away the ping. In addition to the other things mentioned above, check for vacuum leaks, make sure the engine coolant temperature sensor to the computer is good. Clean the carbon out of the cylinders, get a good fuel injector cleaning. Pinging on the 4.0 OHV is common and those are the usual fixes from what I've seen.
