Yblock timing

I have a 239 ci. in my 54 F100. I was getting very poor engine perfomance until today. I adjusted the timing a it worked out. When I last set it, it was May - does the fact that it is 30 degrees outside and not 90 have anything to do with it?

Also I would like to know what the timing needs to be set at? And how? When I set it last year, I don't remember seeing any timing marks like my sbf's used to have. Of course I haven't had my timing light out since 1984!

Glenn, I got my 54 service book out....
239 y block v8
initial advance timing....10 deg. BTDC
point gap....................0.014 to 0.016
spart plug gap all 1954......0.025 to 0.029 inches

could not find a clear answer for the curb idle speed in this service book, maybe someone else out there could help on that part.

hope this helps, ED

According to my vin number and everyone I have talked with...the only v-8 offered to the f 100 trucks in 54 was the y-block 239. all other engines...223 (6 banger), along with the 256, 279 and 317 were for the larger trucks.
I have only had my truck for one week since driving it home from Virginia to South Carolina, so I have not taken the time to find the stamped code on the block to confirm the number.
My truck is completely mechanically stock(converted to 12 volt) right down to the oil bath air cleaner so I dont expect anything other than the 239 to be in it.

The service book that I have is for the 54/55 trucks. There is a 53 book out there that is good and it should be used with the 54 suppliment issued with all of the changes made between 53 and 54 series trucks. I have seen these books for sale on ebay.

Today I am repairing the wire harness for the headlights...one day I'll replace the entire harness.

The 223 OHV 6 and the 239 OHV V8 were standard offerings in the F-100 thru F-500 inclusive. The 6 was not available in the F-600; those came with the 239 or 256.

Carl,
Thanks for the insight on the models and engines...I learn something more about these old trucks every day.

Do you have an idea what the curb idle should be when tuning the carb on the 239 in a 54?

All the other info I relayed to Glenn on the points, plugs and valve lash was right out of the service book
(form number 7099-55 on back cover).
Are there any better specs that have been found to be a better tune up for these trucks other than what I have listed?

thanks, Ed

Your info was good Ed, just nitpickin' on my part. Comes with becoming an old fart I guess
Also helps to have lots of manuals and old Hollanders to back up the memory at times.

Idle is 450 on the standard shift.

Carl,

I don't see valve lash in your reply. What does your book say and does it say how often to check it?

Lash at .019 hot for both. A great tutorial on setting them has been posted here a few times, check the archives. I dont remember the thread author.
The settings should hold for years IF the locks are good. I did my 239 when I got it and never touched it again. It was an excellent runner when pulled.
