hey guys
how low does the fuel have to be to make the LFL come on?
I have run the fuel into the red a few times and the LFL
will not come on.
I know the bulb is not burned out because, it comes on with all
other light cluster upon start-up.
Really its not a big deal I just like everything to work
no matter what!
Thanks in advance.

I have seen mine on twice. The overhead display said 20 miles left. Which would equal about 1 1/2 gallons of fuel left. I get 14.3 MPG. That is a little late in my opinion. I usually notice the overhead display switch from the outside temp to miles till empy. It will switch when it reaches 48 miles till empty. Then I start looking for gas. I have a 01 F250 5.4 Crew cab.
Mine comes on right when the needle hits red, but the needle has much more travel before it is empty. In my truck the tank is not empty until the needle sits all the way at the bottom of its travel (about 1/8" below red). Don't ask how I know.... KP
There's supposed to be a sensor in the tank that activates the warning light and chime to notify you of low fuel. Might check the dealer on that one.
Can you drive it well past the "E" (empty) mark on the gauge? As KP mentioned above, some trucks the gauge is just off and it registers empty when there's still a fair amount left. Have you tried running it completely out of gas? I know that's not great to do, but one time to find out how off the gauge is might give you piece of mind when driving in the future. Maybe try it once to see. Obviously get a gas can full of gas to refill when you run out. But write down the mileage (or zero out the odometer) when your truck's fuel gauge hits "empty". See how much further you can go. Maybe your light and chime will come on when the gauge is below empty? (but you still actually have gas left). Just an idea... cuz maybe your gauge and needle are just out of whack with the fuel level display?
Grabbin' at straws here, but maybe worth a try...
Or you could just take it to the dealer and say, "hey, fix this..."

well after seeing all the other posts the LFL will come on if I
run the fuel low enough, I dont think I will worry about this
one. Being in this climate (michigan -1 this morning) I always keep plenty of fuel in the tank. Thanks for all replys.
The other day I was on my way to get gas, was just below 1/4,,,stopped and started talking to my buddy, I was in my truck, he in his, I was headed down hill slightly, after a few minutes, I heard the chime, LFL came on, and my gauge was on empty then, , just the angle the truck sits seems to affect the gauge, I have the 38 gallon tank, so when the gauge was on empty ,,it took 32 gallons to fill it, on this trip,, , just to let ya know.
I agree with Mark, they definately read differently if you are on a hill. My entire neighborhood is on a giant hill. If I park facing downhill the tank reads lower than it really is. If I park uphill the gauge reads higher than the actual amount. Hope this makes sense.... KP
