I have a 63 F-100 with a 62 Galaxie 292 in it. Does anyone think it would be worthwhile to swap over to a 68 352 with 390 heads. I dont know much about the motor, just that it came out of my fathers 72 F-250 a couple years ago when the frame broke and that it was in good running condition. I'm not looking for a hot rod motor, just something with more room for improvement than the 292.
well your 352 with 390 heads the heads are just regular they used the same ones as they did on the 352 and all the way through the FE, and the 390 will fit with some mods done to it, i think the motor mounts and the bellhouseing will have to be changed, its not hard to find an FE bellhouseing, 352's arnt bad but they dont create a lot of hp and torque but would be an improvement over the 292 small block.
just got done with that exact swap. i have a 63 f-100 that had a 292 in it so i went out bought me a doner truck with a 390 in it and put it in the 63.
first you will most definently need different motor mounts. jcwhitney sells a swap kit for this particular swap but they dont work i know this because i baught the kit. it did however come in handy becaus i has the motor mounts out of the other truck and had them welded to to swap kit. after that the motor whent in fine. no you will need to get some gauges because the 63 has the idiot lights also you now will have a alternator not a genorator. the trans most likely a 3 on the tree is different that the than the 3 spd that mated to the fe engines. use the trans that was in your dads truck if possible becaus fe c-6s are not easy to find well unless you have a small fortune which i dont. now if by chance the f-250 has a np-435 the drive shaft that is in your pickup now will work yeah finally some good news. you will need a slip yoak for the trans though becaus the drive shaft cant be solid to the tran and rearend. other than that it was cool to see that big O motor in that pick up. Hope ya the best of luck.
If you hook up the wires right your generator light will still work. I swapped my generator to an alternator and the idiot light works. When I get further into redoing it I will replace them but it does work.
