Ok, this is SAD.
Here in the DC area we had a dusting of snow this morning, and it was aobut 25*
GRIDLOCK
The sad thing about it all is that most places with high population (and traffiic) density are only one small perturbation away from gridlock. Heck, just the sight of someone getting a ticket on the side of the freeway is enough to cause the whole dang freeway to slow down substantially. Look what happens when there is an accident that is no longer blocking traffic. Even the other side of the freeway gets bogged down. A little snow causing havoc doesn't surprise me. The same thing happens out here in the other Washington.

GRIDLOCK
I was born in the D.C. area and lived most of my life there, so "I feel your pain". That area has seen tremendous growth over the past 20 years and unfortunately, the transportation infrastructure has not kept pace. I agree with what Mikeman said about being "only one small perturbation away from gridlock", but in D.C., gridlock occurs on a daily basis. "Rush hour" there lasts from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m and from 2:30 p.m until around 7:30 p.m. Coupled with the fact that the D.C. area is transient by nature (military, Federal Government, Embassies, etc) when it snows you can bet on a miserable commute. To answer 1956MarkII , yep, you just about hit the nail on the head. D.C. shuts down with a foot of snow. Schools close, the Federal Government and State Governments shut down, and people go stir crazy sitting in their houses waiting for the snow plows to arrive. I moved from that area 4 years ago and I must say, I don't miss it at all.

While return from friends for Christmas a lady blew passed us, got about 200 yrds. in front of us and spun out ending up in the ditch..We (along with a few others) stopped and pushed her back on the highway..As we approched her she rolled down her window and said "I was only doing 75mph."..That was 75mph on roads that were just 2 days before closed (4 lane highway) because of snow and wind..The roads were a mess, rutty and at times like a roller coaster..There were cars, pickups, and semi's in the ditches the whole 250 mile trip..Only doing 75 she says, if it wouldn't have been for the 3 small kids she had in the car we would have left her..
