While on my way to work I saw the weirdest looking Suburban I'd ever seen. It was a 1500 Suburban that was converted into a dually!
What was funny was the amount of trouble this thing was having getting around after the good heavy snow that we had last night...it was a real riot watching this dude!
My question is, why would anyone want to do this?
What would be the advantage of this, other than sucking more fuel and a extra pair of tires to buy?
IMO it looked just as bad as a honda with a 4' aluminum spoiler!
I just dont get it....
Any one ever seen this done to a Ford....The only ones I've seen so far are chebbys.
Not smacking the Burbans, but those things are great. I bought one used recently and believe it or not, You can haul a 4x8 sheet of ply with the doors closed! I stacked in 26 sheets of 1/4 ply and the front end seemed to float a bit. By converting the truck to a dually, you basicly have a covered 1-ton.
People do that conversion not for a carrying advantage, but to steady up the towing of a large trailer. The dually set up is great for towing, but Terrible for snow or mud. Now my truck is single wheels, it can get far more places.
Wouldn't there be a huge problem of extra vertical torque on the rear axel?
If you compare a regular rear end to a dually rear end, the wheel bearings are further to the middle of the dually tires than of the converted dually??
I saw one of those Suburban turned duallies here in town a while back. It really looked wierd. Are all of these custom made, or can you buy from a dealer like that?
Dually = fifth-wheel towing. How would you tow a fifth wheel with a SUBURBAN? How much better would a conventinal trailer tow behind a dually Suburban? The improvement would be all in your mind.......

Duallies do actually tow a bumper tow trailer better than the single wheel in some cases. The difference is very real - the larger the trailer the more inclined it is to sway the rear of the tow vehicle - the dually wheels sure help with that. I miss the duallies for that reason only.
Maybe I should turn my 150 into a dually? Thought about doing that if I ever drop a serious motor init, puttin on the tubs and some massive like 18 inch wide tires on it in the back...hmm.......

Maybe i'm just dreaming.....
It would seem to me that they swap an entire dually rear end into the truck, that way no worries

That would be the right way to do it, as far as i'm concerned.
I do know that there are adapter kits out there for the wheels, they kinda look like a large coffee can with 7 or 8 tubes welded to it. To me these are nothing more than a cheap imitation compared to the real thing.
i think they look cool that way, kinda a coverd one ton truck with seating for 9 people. i remember seeing one pulling two cars on a trailer seemed to work good for him and his family. you guys ever seen the movie twister? there was a black dually suburban in that movie pulling that thing what ever it was. i would do it to my suburban if i had a need for it.
