It sure is a sick world we live in, where criminals steel the id of the dead, but it has been going on for years. It is good this perp got caught, and hopefully they will catch more of them, but there are books dedicated on how to steal a dead man's id, and websited also dedicated to it.. The tip of the iceburg showed up, and got dealt with swiftly, but the problem is still massive.

My SSN was "borrowed" by an illegal alien when I was living in CA. She was trying to get my paychecks from the bank before they were sent to my job. The bank refused to give them to either one of us until it was straightened out, so I got no pay for 3 weeks and as far as I know she didn't even get a slap on the wrist. Wonder how much she paid for her papers.

I wonder if somebody stole my identity, if I could stick them with my mortgage and car payment....
That would be a fitting punishment for somebody who did that. Make them responsible for not only the debt they racked up on your ID, but also for any debts already incurred before the ID was stolen.
Steal my identity, and you get to pay for my mortgage, car, credit cards, student loans and computer. That would be a great deterrent, if it was feasible. But then you'd have a whole new kind of fraud: people would start framing each other for ID theft.
We live in a beautiful society, no?

alot of theft is being caused by people themselves, our work phone number is only one digit off of city banks 800 number for customer service, we get probley 120 calls a month from cardholders, you would not believe how many start out the conversation by reading off there card numbers and all there personal details. If i was a broke man ( which i am) and needed money ( i do) to buy parts online ( which i want to ) and a low life theif ( i am not ) i could order parts all day long and it wouldnt even be a challange to get the information i need from just a few callers dialing our number by mistake. people need to be more carefull when giving out there numbers on the phone.

I work construction and dumping trash on my job sites is alweays a problem. One day I came in and there was a filing cab laying next to the dumpster not in but next. Any way I open it up tp find it is from a large cardealer around the corner rom the job and is full of the records of EVERYONE who has bought a car in the last six months. SSN, Adress, Full name, phone number all teh info for identity theft. i called the dealer and it took them 3 hours to call me back so I called the local news. I hope it took away some of their business that they don't deserve

Second story is landscapers find a bad ssn on a mexican worker and by the next day the guy has a new name and number so they just go with it becausse they are cheap help.

WOW, Should be a law against that. You would think the car dealer would have been in big trouble.

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER give your SSN to anyone unless they can tell you why they absolutely need it. My identity was stolen a little more than a year ago, and it took 3 months to get it all straightened out. My SSN and personal information was stolen by a red cross worker when I was donating blood. It's sad to say, but I haven't given blood since. Guard your SSN like it is gold, because it is.
