NAME calling/criticizing

Look, if a person can't take it then why not get out. I don't mind some name calling/criticizing. It causes one to look at their own view points. You want to call me a name.....I'm a big boy ,I can take it. If it gets to hot I'll leave.
Why can't we speak our mind? FREEDOM OF SPEACH

The same reason you can't call a midget a midget, a retard a retard, a mexican a mexican, so on and so on. No one wants to offend anyone else. Political correctness horse pucky. The truth hurts. Add rightousness to it by saying we all must remain civil. We can't be on here conducting ourselves like a bunch of animals, so therefore no labels are allowed.

God forebid you say the word "******" anymore. I think that word carries a manditory sentence of ten years now.

Don't get me wrong, if you cant get your point across without profanity then you need to work on your presentation. However, they are just words. They don't change the truth. Example, the thread about not calling it mad cow disease. Call it what ever you want, its still mad cow disease.

Hmmmmmm

Could it be that "Rules are Rules" thing that's helped keep this forum alive.

If everyone abides by the rules of this forum (and this site), the Pig Pen remains open for all to voice their opinions/beliefs. If it becomes a free-for-all, not only does the Mod & Admin guys have to work O/T, but there's a good chance of the forum being closed.

The Ford vs. Competition was closed for months and many people didn't like that (including myself).

Sure you do.

How is your freedom diminished by asking you to refer to people as they would wish not how you want. You may disrespect if you like but if there are consequences you have only yourself to blame.

Well I've been edited. Apperently we cant even type the word that once was used to refer to people of color ( can't call'em black anymore either).

I have no problem with rules. I appreciate the tone that the moderates keep in the forum. I agree that it keeps this forum enjoyable. A free for all would take the intellect out of the debates.

My point was simply that our society's move toward political correctness, IMHO, has gone to far.

It might not come as a surprise that white men are the ones being asked to make a concession. Our opinion of what is too far means little to those who are making the demands as it should.

I think you took my comment out of context.

Let me put it this way.
The words that once were used as the correct terminology over time become labels and then take on a negitive conitation. When in fact they are still used to describe the same condition or characteristic.

I realize this is a TOUCHY SUBJECT and that is why it is in the pig pen. Heres my point. If two black guys are talking and they refer to themselves by the dreded N word its fine. There is no negitive conitation. If I say it, being a white guy, it automaticly takes on a negitive conitation. That is a double standard.

I have lost the freedom of using the N word as a black man, oops man of color, can.

There is definitely a one-way streak of ultra-sensitivity that permeates our modern society. People are frequently chastised for innocent remarks that are taken the wrong way - that have their meanings redefined after the fact. Remember Howard Cossell? If some guy today used the words "black" and "monkey" in the same sentence, or even in the same paragraph, his job's in jeopardy, and he's put on Al Sharpton's and Jesse Jackson's (can I say it?) black list.

Please don't get me wrong (this is where I'm supposed to say I have a lot of black friends). I am prejudiced, but not about skin color. I'm prejudiced by peoples' actions, and I'll dislike whoever I want, no matter what color they are. If somebody wants to play the race card, that's their game - not mine.

I'm hesitant to post this, but hey - bring it on.

pchristman,

Are you suggesting Howard's reference to "monkey" should have slid by?

Pchristman, I could not agree more.

I heard some one on tv say that unless you have a gavel in your hand you should not be judging anyone. I can not disagree with that statement more. I watch and listen to people and the decisions that they make everyday. I then formulate my own opinion about that person and the way they handled themselves. I then use my newly formed opinion to guide me through my own decisions.
Thats judgeing people. I do it every day and think nothing of it. There is nothing wrong with learning from others mistakes. To do that you must first make a judgement to decide if they right or wrong, and then go from there.
I'm sure this makes me prejudice to many. I am fine with that.

sinjin,
I think he should at least been given the benefit of the doubt - I don't believe he intended it to be a racial slur. Others have made much more serious remarks, which did contain malicious intent, and suffered little or no repercussions. (I'm off to do a search now, to back this up, with a story about shooting a man with a "44 bulldog". Many, I'm sure, have heard the story, but I cannot at this time remember names.)

Why can't we speak our mind? FREEDOM OF SPEACH
On this website we tend to pride ourselves on our ability to act like adults.

I'm pretty sure I saw the epitaph 'haulingbutt' instead of 'haulingboat' somewhere. I know it wasn't you, but it serves the point. Pretty innocuous, right? Perhaps the world won't come crashing down, but it is definately a very juvenile act. The only thing names like this do is bring the whole level of discourse down. For the most part people here don't want to discuss important topics at the level of fourth graders.

That is why we hold ourselves to a high standard. If you cannot handle that, perhaps you should be the one getting out. I sincerely hope you do not leave, but rather recognize the situation as it is not as you would like it to be.

And here I thought that people would be attracted to a place that was considered Respectful Toward Each Other and everyone that appeared there, would feel Respected also.
