Why can't we speak our mind? FREEDOM OF SPEACH
and besides being nice to each other and respecting each other....take into account that when you start name calling and criticizing people for their thoughts or ideas, you automatically lose the attention of your audience and the purpose of the thread anyway.
I'm not going to knowingly keep discussing a topic with someone who cannot respect me as a person...and honestly, once they begin that my desire to want to talk to them and respect them goes out the window. If you are truely intrested in a topic, why would you disservice yourself by turning others off to what you have to say?
Sinjin, I don't know this to be fact but I asume The N word, that we can not type much less say, started because some of those slaves came from African country Niger. I don't think it was invented as a derogitory term, yet developed into one as the years passed.
What about cracker? Hawaiians use to call me holle. That was invented as aprejorative term.

I don't see how anyone has prevented you from using these words, or any words, any time you want, your 1st Amendment right is still pleny intact, adn the courts aren't about to tell you you can't anytime soon. (FTE being a private meeting place, is exempt from these rules, it's owners have the right to decide what is and is not acceptable content)
The part you don't seem to like is that there are consequences and connotations to these words. To be frank - tough. The majority, or in some cases the minority, gets to decide on the meaning and connotation of some words, not you. You are aware of them and their connotations before hand, use them accordingly, or be prepared for the consequences.

the dictionary says "cracker" is a humorous reference to a resident of Georgia or Florida.
Where does it set in stone that "the word" came from negro.
Once again the dictionary
They are just words. Its up to the speaker to dictate the intent behind them.
What does "just words" mean exactly. Words are very powerful and can lift someone up or tear them down. Would you think it fine to call a child "stupid" every time they got something wrong?
And as far as the speaker determining the intent of the words spoken you are correct. The problem is that it is the listener who determines the meaning and message of the speakers words. An older man might call the young guy on the job "kid" with no negative intent and still offend a young man who thinks himself a grown man and not a "kid". Who could have avoided the offense taken more easily? Substitute "boy" for "kid" and apply it to a black man and I think you get the idea. Unless you're just stupid.
I've worked at lots of power plants (mostly TVA) and have seen many a foreman refer to his crewmen as "boys", eg: "...you boys roll out the torches, you boys bend up the tubes", etc, and the only guys I saw take offense were those who came to the job with a chip on their shoulder. I've got a brother-in-law who calls the guys on his crews "girls", so that everyone is offended equally, and no one is left out.
