351M vs. 460

Hi all,

Well ,the 351M is out of the truck. It needs a rear main seal, and an intake gasket set. It's rusty, but runs pretty good. Maybe 70K miles.
I'm on a super tight budget, 'cause the Galaxie needs attention, too, and I just got engaged. So, here's my thoughts:

Pop in my semi-fresh 460. Engine mounts, headers, and oil pan set will cost me $700 or so, plus P/S mount........what else will I need? Cheapie mufflers for the fenderwell headers, too.

Clean up the 351M. New timing set, gaskets, and exhaust (stock is rusted completely, gone). Maybe a cam & lifters, and a 4V intake & carb? Would the extra $400 be worth it?

I'd like to drive this thing to work every day, but I have my little Ranger as a back up. I'd plow with it, and tow my cars around when necessary. The 460 was always my intention, but money is scarce right now. Used swap parts are what I really need!!

What do you guys think?

I've battled this many many times in my mind and when my clutch went out last winter I rebuilt the 400. Was that the right move ???? I don't know!!! What I do know is that every body and there brother has put the 460 in there trucks. I'm happy with what I've got.
If you stay with the 351m convert it to a 400 and do the mods in the 351 forum and I think you'll be happy
You probally wern't lookig for an opinion but there both good.
I regret selling my 63 1/2 galaxie 500 XL

Keep the 351M. You don't have to do the carb and 4V intake yet, you just need something that runs.

I'm leaning toward the 351 freshening. Does the timing set make sense, at least? I've read there is much power & economy to be gained from a timing chain that can be installed "straight up" vs. 4 degress retarded.

Thanks!

I've got a new 351m. If there is something that can be done to gain fuel economy, go for it! I have to tell you, though, if more power is needed from an engine than what my truck does, I can't imagine what it would be needed for. Are you towing something?

I don't know about fuel economy out of the straight up timing, I know its good for 70 horses though.

My 351M gets 15 MPG.

15? Man, I'm getting about half of that. I don't know what I'm missing. I wish we had some kind of drive-in convention for posters on this site somewhere or something.

What have you done to the motor?

Tuning that carb helped a ton, I went from 8-10 to a solid 13 around town and 15 on the interstate @70 MPH

Nothing; just put it in last week. The engine I replaced, you could almost see the gas needle going down.

My carb is brand new, too.

(I've got 2 different user names)

IMOP, i would say stay with the 351m, just freshen it up, stick with the 2bbl. if you need something that makes a little bit ( speaking in relative terms ) of power, yet still has some fuel economy, that is your best bet.
