What would be the best power wire to tap into for my tach i just got, the radio's power wire maybe?? Also i need a wire for illumination/dimmer what one should i ude for that, its a 77 f-150 by the way.
i have always used the light right behind the light and wiper swwitch for the dimmer. radio would work for power. i have always had a large power 8 gauge run to a distro box cause i use a lot of ppower in my trucks for accys. but i dont see a prob usin the radio wire.
Hey GUYS!!!!!! There is a multi-female (3 i think) connector on the left side of the dash. Look for it in the area of the windshield wiper switch. It is key switched for accessories. All ya gotta do is plug into it. NO splicing, NO cutting. What could be better?
You can tap the red tach wire into the radio or heater fuse circuit. The white (light wire) can be hooked up at the 5amp instrument panel fuse.
Fuse #2 is for the dash lights
Fuse #"s 1, 5, or 10 may be used for 12v Tach power.
Scotts77, my 460 sending unit is on the intake in the front. I actually just put a tach in my truck this morning, and i used the cigarette lighter wire because, in my truck, that only comes on with the key ON. I always thought that the lighter is supposed to work on accessory AND start???

I bet you are talking about the yellow 3-way female connector ?
That is where the cruise control gets some power from ( yes Keyed)
Yes that's the connector I'm referring to. Even with cruise connected to it there are still 2 open 12V switched connections that can be used for accessories. I would only use them for light loads like a tach or radar detector etc. Can't run a 10 kazillion watt amp from it but you don't have to chop, hack, butcher, destroy the original wiring harness to connect to a key switched 12V source.
Something I've learned is keeping a log of my aftermarket wiring in my chilton manual. I had a mess under my dash when I bought the truck. Seems it was causing a nightmare in my fuse box. I ripped all of the P-0's wiring out and done away with most of it. Now, like when I wired my stereo, I keep a log of the wires in the chilton manual. I found the cruise receptical. Thats where the stereo memory wire went to....lol...
