Are you running a stock engine? I know a few that have used nos in thier 4.0's. 3 of the 4 were stock, and 2 of them took the kit back off after the third one blew his up off a 75 kit.
I don't suggest it on the 4.0's - basically because they cannot withstand the pressure very long that even a 50 kit will produce. It can be done, but you are taking a big chance with it. Plus, you are killing the engine a lot faster (if you don't have any problems). The 5.0's can hold the kits a little better - but on stock engines, it really does more damage than good. If I were looking for more power, I would look into doing a 5.0 and tranny swap before I went with a nos kit. Yes, it would be a few more dollars - but the power if a lot more durable.
hey cobraxp you could take out they 4.0 and rebuit it with high perforamce parts and oversize the bore too or have i watched to much of the fast and the furyious lol
You would need to have a very strong bottom end, NOS causes a lot of stress on the motor. You would be best rebuilding the motor with stronger internals if you want to run a shot of NOS.
Phew, i've invested $1k total for Borla exhaust and a cold air intake kit for my 2000 explorer, but, isn't NOS going a little overboard for an explorer? The same question comes as to why people buy $200,000 ferraris but you can't open them up anywhere
The problem is the dollar sign behind it. By the time you get a Zex kit, install it, take the bottle and get it filled, etc - you have a lot of money tied up in a system that will not hold the pressure or yield the value for the dollar.
You could safely get away with shooting a 25 shot kit - but in all honesty - what are you going to get from a 25 shot?
You can use a 50 or 75 shot kit - but you will see your daily driver erode quickly.
And anything 100 or over is just asking to create a fireworks show...
Now, if you want to build a 302 - then add a 100 or 125 kit - then we are talking in another ballpark...
Hey man, yeah I wouldn't suggest NOS on an Explorer. I knew a guy who put it on his Camero, and it tore the engine apart. BTW, I was thinkin of puttin a new Flowmaster exuast and the K&N FIPK kit on my 4.0 X. Did those two parts add noticable power?
I ordered both cold air and borla cat-back kit and i got the shop to do a dual exhaust. All i can say is it sounds great and the throttle response is a lot smoother than stock. It also rumbles!!!
You'd have to hear it to believe it...ill try to record revving the motor on my digital recorder when i can.
