Electric elephant ears

The wife nailed a mailbox with a mirror (see posts below) on the dually. I got a new lens assembly from Fomoco but the posts (2) that go to the mirror motors aren't in the kit, just the stationary posts(3) come with it. Fomoco say's my only option is a complete assembly at over $200 (and I thought $40 for the glass was stiff). So here I am with the need for a two buck post with no way to get it other than a $240 complete assembly. Does anyone have any ideas on this other than me whittling a new one? Thanks

Ouch! Maybe this should be posted as a warning under the "Wife Drove My SuperDuty" thread below.

This happens too often. A mirror gets broken and the whole friekin' assembly has to be replaced. At first, I didn't think much of it. But now, seeing how many times it is happening, it's actually starting to tick me off.
It's like if I painted someone's home and used the wrong primer in one area, that would be a problem area anyway, just so I could keep coming back to fix it for easy money. I'm tellin' ya, it's a frikkin' Fomoco conspiracy.

Goodfoot, unfortunately I know just what you mean. I was coming home from work today in a heavy rain/wind storm. The wind blew over some signs in a construction area. They were laying across the concrete barrier wall. Some idiot (I have better names) in a little car decided not to stay in his lane, and swerved into mine just as I got to the sign. Took the drivers side mirror off almost completely. God, I hate road construction and idiots. So, now I'm in the market for one also. That's it, I'm thinking of going shopping at www.RoadArmor.com. Then let 'em try to share my lane again.

Electric elephant ears

Lucky I read about this on the forum before I took mine out. I stopped immediately at collected all the little parts from the ground so I was able to buy the glass only. Even if you salvage the electric screw thingies it was pretty much impossible to put them on with the waterproof rubber grommets so mine are exposed. I expect it to short anytime now so Ford will get me in the end I bet. Look on ebay, there always seems to be elephant ears for sale.

Has anyone had to face a new Dodge 2500 or 3500 with their new towing mirrors?? Those things stick out like 2.5 feet and with mine out I thought we were going to have a smackdown on Colfax (very tight busy street in Denver).

It dosen't make a lot of sense to me to make large mirrors with a folding feature to protect the mirrors and what they might hit and then they won't fold upon contact. Apparently Ford has a better idea, but I sure wish they'd share it with us.

Well, mine did fold in as they were supposed to, but, it was too late to save anything. Just got back from the body shop. What I had thought was little pieces of glass on my door and window, actually turned out to be gouges in the metal and window. When I got the estimate, it almost made me sick, $970.09. They are going to have to replace the window, rubber weather stripping, complete mirror assembly, and sand and paint the door. This definately doesn't help how I feel about the state of Ohio. Now I just have to decide if I'm gonna turn it in to the insurance co. or pay it out of pocket. It's about $1000 either way if you figure how much my insurance will raise if I turn in the claim.

Its a shame that you have to pay so much for insurance and then you can't afford to use it. Automotive insurance is getting like life insurance, its only good if your dead.

Electric elephant ears

I just got my Elephant ears in the mail yesterday that I bought on ebay for $230.00 for the pair(brand new). The local ford dealer wanted over $500.00 for those things. These came from Deihl auto parts in Ann arbor, MI. Now I can finally see behind and beside me. I love them. The install was fairly easy. What ticks me off is I bought a 1 ton truck with the towing package and the thing didn't come with towing mirrors. The mirrors that were on it in my opinion were completly useless, even when I wasn't towing anything. After reading about the problems with hitting things with the elephant ears I'm going to be extra careful.

I do get an employee discount, but, my dealer priced the drivers side mirror for $148.00. Can't believe it would be that much difference between Michigan and Kentucky.
