Im planning on using comp cams xtreme energy cam kit with .513 in and .520 ex with 262 270 duration and operating range of 1400 to 5600. They say you can use the stock torque converter but would it be better to get a 1500 stall torque converter i have to replace the converter anyways but im not really going to race the truck but if I want to I want to beable to get on it and roast the tires.
That should be a good cam and a stock converter will be just fine. Have you considered a RV/towing converter for less slip and better mileage? Your 400 will have gobs of torque anyway.
Almost any tranny shop should have what your looking for, just tell them what you want and they should have it. Summit or jegs should have what B&M calls the Traveler converter, which is the same thing. These converters are perfect for what your looking to do, as the converter in the small race truck is the same, and we cant get the motor out of it's torque band quick enough. Not good for racing, but perfect for what you want it for.
TCI is a respectable company. You gotta watch some of those torque converters out there though. I wouldn't trust some of B&M's TorqueMaster converters, and some of those remanned converters out there. Sure, the price might look nice, but you get what you pay for...an OEM converter thats been split open and say the turbine fins worked over with a pair of pliers. TCI's are a little more expensive, but they use a whole new cast, and they're well worth the money.
