Hapy New Year everybody,
My wife's 2003 Explorer only has about 10, 000 miles on it, and it smells terrible. Just thought it a little early for the cat to go bad, and was wondering if there may be a problem with them?
I'm sure the warranty will cover whatever the problem is, but I am curious if anybody else had one go bad so quickly?
The Explorer has a 4.6 V8
Why do you think it's the Cat? What Kind of smell? cat's don't go bad......they clog.......but don't go bad. My B-Inlaw manuf. cats etc... and dist to all the states as well as some other countrys and he has explained this to more than one person (I was skeptical too). Back in the day before in was illegal to re-cond cats he used to buy them by the thousands from bone yards.....cut out the core............put it in a new can and make like 200-250% profit......only a small amt. (less than 2%) were either damaged or clogged so bad it wasn't worth the effort to re furb..........in that case they scrapped them for the platnium. the honeycomb style would clog the easiest........the other style (beads) were better! Unless a motor is blowing tons of oil or running rich for 10-20,000 mi. or more it's real hard to damage one!
I called the dealership today and told them about the problem with the odor in the explorer.
The service manager that I had spoke with, told me that it probably wasn't the cat converter, but the heating and air conditioning system, he advised that they would have to flush it with some sort of chemical that would eliminate the odor. I didn't come out and ask, but from the way he was talking it sounded like a common problem.
I have an appointment in about two weeks to have it looked at.
Yea thats a common problem on most new cars, you get a rotten egg smell........i dont believe it comes out from the exhust i think it gets emitted somewere when the cooling fan is on or the car is warm, it is in fact the heating and ac, does not bother most people only can smell it with the windows down and the heat or ac on, ussually clears it self with age of the vehical
OK, I got an extra day off work, and was able to get into the dealership earlier than scheduled.
They had the Explorer for about two hours and explained that the heater plenem had a mold or bacteria of some sort growing in it from the humid summer that we had. They cleaned it and circulated some sort of industrial cleaner through the system.
I don't have the foul odor any more, but now it smells like LYSOL.
