2002 Explorer Catalytic Converter
I have a 2002 Explorer XLT 4.0 V6 A/T This vehicle has a bad catalytic converter on bank 1. The problem is that there are 3 catalytic converters on this car and they are a 1 piece unit. It is extremely expensive to replace the whole unit. Can 1 cat be replaced without the expense of replacing them all?

I would think a decent exhaust shop would be able to cut a bad converter out and weld a new one in. But, if the converter is bad, you'll want to understand why it failed before replacing it. Converters don't often fail due to normal wear, they generally fail due to a A/F ratio issue.

I had a bad spark plug and the engine was misfiring on that cylinder. That has been fixed but now the catalytic converter has a rattle to it. I'm also getting the P0420 code. I will check with a muffler shop about the possibility of replacing the cat. Thanks
