I sold my first truck with 202,000 miles on the original straight six. That was an 86. I bought another 86 with a 302, but I'm going to sell it, I like the power, but the truck got hit. anyway I found an 82 in excellant original condition with the 4.9 liter 6 again. low miles, good paint, no holes or rust in the floors or bed at all. I wanted to know what the differences were between the 86 straight six and the 82 straight six.
If so it must be minor, I had an 81 F100 for a while, and I have an 85 full size now that has a motor robbed from an 83 econline in it. I've had them all out and couldn't tell any difference at all, not even the oil pans. I know the late model fuel injected engines are different... but all my older ones use all the same parts, plugs, filters, etc... Other than possible emmision control changes they should be the same.
you have to be careful cause I wanted to swap an 85 with an 82 motor (just short blocks) and the ford dealership said that the specs are different. i dont know what and where they were exactly, but if you go to your local ford dealer, they should be able to tell you. hope this helps
