I've read alot on here about the great benefits of replacing the stock cam with a performance edelbrock or comp cam but wanted to know a ballpark price of what a garage might charge to do this?
You'd probably be best off calling around to some local reputable shops and getting some price quotes. There's just too much of a disparity in labor rates nationwide to expect a reasonably accurate quote here. Besides if I were running a shop I'd throw the book away or at least tag on a few extra hours for everything that could possibly go wrong trying to change a cam on a 25 year old engine. Just getting the distributor out on these motors can sometimes take 2-3 hours.
Your right alot of stuff I have had fun doing myself with my truck but most of the stuff I can do are basic things like replace plugs, cap, rotor, thermostat, fuel filter, clean EGR ports, carb adjustments etc.
And alot of these things I've only learned since buying my truck last year and reading this forum. I really don't have the mechanical experience to attempt something like installing a new cam. I just read the forums here and my haynes manual to learn what I can.
