My 97 Explorer Limited V8/AWD is losing oil at an alarming rate. Ford dealer says the rear main is out, we put it on a lift and yup, its leaking like crazy.
My truck has 57k on it, so, should I just keep driving it and adding oil and then replace the engine when it dies? Or is it better to spend the $1500 and fix it and hope there's nothing else wrong with the engine. I've heard about crankshaft/main bearing problems with these, any truth to that??
I have NO warranty (of course) and am painfully close to just trading the darn thing in on a new one. Right now it needs the rear main seal, oil pan gasket, shocks, brakes, and the stupid blend door is broken.
Help me out here, is there any truth to the rumors about the crankshaft/main bearings being the reason behind the rear main seal going out?
The rear main seal isn't the only problem with this truck. It also needs the blend door repair (not handy enough to try on our own), the oil pan gasket is leaking, and it has a few electrical anomolies that we haven't figured out yet. It needs brakes, rotors, and shocks too.
I'm pretty bummed out, we still owe $$$ on it and for the moment its worth what we owe even with the rear main out.
They have to pull the engine to fix it. I've checked with everyone and $1500 is the cheapest estimate for fixing it. It wouldn't be back if it wasn't a V8.
You don't have to pull the engine to change the rear main seal. Thats BS.
You do have to lift it a bit, but the suspension on the vehicle will take care of that. Then removing the oil pan and loosening the main bearing caps and pulling out the old seal and replacing it. Its relatively simple, yet time consuming.
hmmmmm, maybe I'll do some more digging. My little brother is a mechanic and he said he won't touch it. I'll check around some more, might be able to find a cheaper price.
Otherwise if I keep the truck I'm going to just let it leak for now, just keep an eye on the oil. I had a 90 Suburban with the rear main out, took about 4 years before it got bad enough to warrant changing.......that was the point I was putting in a quart every 250 miles.
