IAT (intake air temp) sensor relocation?

Has anyone moved their IAT (intake air temp) and found that it was causing any negative effects...how far did you move it, is it still in the air stream, hidden in a "cold place"...what did you do and what did you find out?... I dont want to move it to too cold an area so that the car wants to "idle rich" all of time and burn too rich. right now my engine burns well and under load it is 14.7ish on the air/fuel gauge, so I really dont see a big need or want to change the location.

Why do you want to move it? usually the reason to move it is because you want to put in a cooler area to have a richer air/fuel mixture. The better option would be to put in a phenolic spacer to actually keep the incoming air cooler.

Hello Silvapain
We have talked about the phenolic spacer before, and I have ordered one...as that does seem to be the better option. I have not moved my IAT and I do not see the need or point to do so (my engine burns correctly)...its just every "modification" page I see on the web says to do it, I am wondering what people are finding out about doing this "mod" as a friend of mine did it to her car (non vulcan) and sometimes floods the thing under normal driving to the point were it will not restart after shut down, and then she has to crank it over with the fuel pump disconnected to clear it out to then get it to fire...thats not cool.

yeah, they usually move the IAT to keep it cool, but if you install the spacer, you won't have that problem. I have a 1/2" spacer between the lower and upper intake, and the upper intake doesn't get above 70-80 degrees, even under hard driving. I would leave the IAT right where it is.

The IAT was mounted in the intake tube for a reason, to sense the temperature of the air entering the engine. I would leave the IAT where it's located.

Hello-
I have not moved my sensor, and I do not see a need to do so...my car burns fine...I posted this to get "real world facts" from people that have done it and to find out/share what they have learned...but it sounds like most are not touching it and that to me is the better answer...

I talked to Bob from Anonda, he said that you wre putting in a Supercharger possibly in the mercedes? sounds interesting.

Thats the plan, in "my gallery" here there is a photo i placed of the blower on my old engine...the new one arrived today and i am going to be installing some parts from morana as they are the only ones that i found with parts for a vulcan(anyone know different let us all know)...(i dont want to spend too much on an experiment and i dont want parts to outcost the new engine) anyway i plan on having only 6-8 pounds, running through a 3 core front mount intercooler (i am having a few parts cnc machined for flow and apperance...) after all it is a 3.0 in a old mercedes, its never going to be a AMG or have a beefier powerplant (the 3.0 is staying because the car is all wired and built for it and the man that gave me the original aerostar is no longer with us...so there is some senimental value to it) also i am trying toi install a mustang rack and pinion on a custom crossmember to run headers, and i want to install a manual tranny and remove the auto...all with the help of my dad...i will keep all posted on what happens with the SC as we have only built one nonfactory boosted car and it is running great(http://www.turbocavalier.50megs.com)...so we shall see about the vulcan.

well my gallery seems to no longer be here...must be because its not a truck...so here is a link to my steering project but it shows a picture of the blower on the motor, what it does not show is the pulley set up...we did have it on and blowing-alt making good voltage under full load (all lamps,heater fan on high, ect.)-and under test acceleration the belts were square. we did not what to "dry run" the blower too long with no back pressure and upset the bearings...

you put a ford motor in a Mercedes? why would anyone want to do that? That is nothing short of sacreligious!

I get that sometimes and sometimes I get WOW! thats amazing...And I suppose you are correct in a lot of ways, but I am a inventor, tinkerer,thinker, garage guy that likes to solve problems (and I still have a life time to learn...) I bought the car when I was 16 with a dead motor...it had about 90 HP and to repair it was out of my league of reason...A neighbor gave me a free Aerostar, my dad said we were going to do a conversion if I wanted (we have built many a HotRod and Mustang among Others)...so he taught me how to do it...Now I have double the horse power(soon more I hope), 5 gears and to Silvapains point (thankyou) my starter went ~$50, for fun I called Mercedes ~$250. Plus it was a fun challege, a good project and I did it while hanging out with my dad so it was enjoyable...Sacreligious-maybe,Creative-maybe, I have no answer to please everyone
...we just like a good challenge.
