302 Heads

Hi. I was wondering if there is any difference between a E6SE head and a E7TE Head?. I have a set of the E6SE's and am just wondering if it would be worth putting them on my 5.0l i'm rebuilding. Or should I find a set of E7TE's? Thanks.

They have a different combustion chamber and they are somewhat high compression. They were only used on mustangs during 1986 and never before or since. The E7 casting has a much more open chamber and has plenty of material for porting. On a truck, the E7 should probably out perform the E6.

But... in your possession is a set of heads. I'd see what you can come up with. Watch your spark plug choice since you have a closed combustion chamber and somewhat high compression with these.

E6SE

Thanks for the quick reply! The 302 with the E6SE heads I have came out of an 85 T-bird. I can pick up a used E7TE head for $99 CAD. If the E7TE heads are better, i'll pick up a set of them. Thanks again!

I have read that the best stock head is the E7 head except for the GT-40 heads.

Are GT-40 heads easy to find? Which car/truck would I find it on in a juck yard? Thanks

The GT40 heads where used on the cobra mustangs and GT40P heads where used on explorers. The GT40P heads take special plugs and headers. The best place to find a set of GT40 heads would be on ebay or some of the forums out there. Maybe a 5.0 forum would be a good place to look.

Summit use to have brand new GT40P heads for $500 complete but they take special headers.

Hey. I just called my buddy at Covey's auto recylers, and he can get me a set of heads off a 1995 Explorer for $125 a head. That would be the GT-40P heads wouldn't it? I was going to go with full length headers, so there is a specific header for the GT-40P's? Thanks

The GT40P heads have a different spark plug location. The plugs exit the head at a different angle so the normal header tubes interfer with the spark plug boots when used on GT40P heads. I am not sure they make headers for a truck application when using GT40P heads.

Can you get the brackets for all of the pulleys and stuff from the explorer motor?

Oh, ok. I'll give him a call and see. Would I see a difference between the GT-40 heads and the GT-40P heads? Thanks.

They say the GT40P heads are better buyt the troubles of getting exhaust manifolds or headers may not be worth the trouble.

I believe some Explorers came with the GT40's and other years came with the GT40P's. I don't know which years had what. I am pretty certain the spark plugs on the P head come straight out instead of normal 302 heads which have them angled.

If you go with the P head and invest in a dedicated set of headers, you will be in the price range of some really good heads like Holley, AFR, Edelbrock, etc. On the other hand, the E7TE head does pretty well and responds well to porting as well. How much do you want to spend is the question.
