302 E6SE to E7TE head swap

Hi all.

I recently came into posession of a 94 F-150 with the 302 engine that needed head gaskets.

I got the heads off, and they are casting E6SE.

I have a pair of E7TE's laying around, and had the idea that I maybe I could use them and pick up some power.

I googled for info on the swap, and some say that the swap will not work because the pistons will need valve reliefs, whereas others say that it will work if I keep the stock cam, rockers, etc.

Does anyone for sure?

I do not think there is a difference in the valve location on the small block heads. I believe they are all the same and even the same dia. except for the 351W heads which ahev larger valves. You will not have a problem with the E7 heads.

I guess I'll give it a try.

Oh, another thing. I pulled my E7's off the shelf and discovered that they don't have any rockers.

Can I transfer the ones from the E6's? Are they the same or similar enough that they will work?

The valves in the E6 heads are shorter and the seats are higher above the deck than other small block heads. That's the reason why Ford used pistons without reliefs in them, in motors with these heads. Swapping heads from E6's to anything else, moves the valves 1/8" closer to the pistons. Now, that said, there are some that have done this swap with stock cams and had no problems, the choice is yours. If going with a higher lift, longer duration cam, then you definately need pistons with reliefs. Your rockers will also swap between those heads without problems. I'd advise inspecting the pushrod ends if you have a roller cam. The pushrods in these don't rotate and tend to wear to a somewhat knife edge over time.
