I am having problems with my 85 crown vic. 302 aod I know this is a truck site but it still is a ford. I have a question as to what effect, not having the egr tubes connected to the cats, would have on the car. I picked up this car this spring of a few hundred bucks. The tubes that are suposed to be conected to the cats are rusted and broke so they are not connected. What symptoms would this cause on the car?
Also having trouble with trying to get it to start after it is warmed up, acts like battry is dieing and dims all lights on car when it trys to turn over. starts great when cold. When it gets warmed up and I shut it off and it wont start, acts like dead battry; I let it sit for about an hour and it will fire right up.
The starting problem could be the starter but, I've seen batteries do the same thing.
Your EGR doesn't hook into your cats. Do you mean the smog pump lines? If so, you could probably repair that with some spare pipe. It may burn out your cats not having it hooked up. It pump air to them so they work better.
yeah the air pump thing. I didn't really know what it was. The exaust fell off behind both cats b4 I had bought it and I dont know what condition the cats are in. The engine light will also come on only after it has warmed up and only when the engine is at a lower rpm. Like when you come to a stop or just let it idle. It is like it lights up from a certain rpm and lower because is it is at a certain rpm it will flicker. The car doesn't seem to have any negitve effects from it. Other than not starting back up when it is hot. What other operations does the air pump have to do with the engine?
That's about it. It just pumps air to clean up the emissions. Run by autozone (if you have one nearby) and they can test your starting system and tell you if it's the batt or starter. Get it good and warm before going.
To be honest with you, I'd replace your ground wire from the battery to the block/chassis. In many cases, these wires will corrode and when you try to start it, they'll act like big resistors, and you'll burn up your juice b4 it gets to the starter.
first I would like to thank you guys for the replys, it is really helpful. So I could actually take the belt off for that being that the belt only runs the air pump and the ac; which I don't need this time of year and don't use in summer? I will take a look at the wireing tomarrow. what would be some posible problems that could be makeing the check engine light come only when it does? low oil pressure? Is there other places that you know of that will do that starter system check? i don't believe that there is an autozone near me. I have on of those multi tester things, but don't know how to use it, and instructions dissapered with house remodeling.
i been thinking about removing all those on mine obut certain problems arrive like one them lead to the wipers cowl where one goes to transmission, with that vacumm out i can only go up to 35 as it will only get first gear?
Starting problem solved!! I finaly got a halfway decent day to change oil and work outside. I got the car up on ramps and started checking the cables going to the starter after I had changed the oil. I wiggled the cable where it was hooked up to the starter and the whole stater caseing moved. It was still bolted tight to the motor but there was two bolts that run the length of the starter that where pretty loose. Tightened them up and started and it fires up right away hot and cold. It also turns over a hell of a lot faster. Go figure. now I just need run new brake lines to the rear end, Only have front right now. back ones blew out right under the drivers door. And get a new drivers side side mirror(long stupid story)
One of those " objects in the mirror are closer than they appear" huh? Good to hear you made some ground. I'd like to get out and get some work done on the mustang but, it's too cold ( been in the 50's). The truck is on hold 'til spring. Wish I had your ambition.
Allright stepman...what do you mean its 50 degrees out and its too cold?!?!?! you live in AZ... where we all wish we were for the next 2 months. (Instead of pushing snow up here).. Come on man. you're letting all of us down... we want to hear how you can work on your truck all year round without the fear of frostbite..
Now get back outside and take one for the team!!!... I'm gonna go turn up the heat so the water pipes in the basement don't freeze.
Damn....what was I thinkin'.... O.K. I'll get back out there first thing in the mornin'. I want to get the stang going first though cuz that is going to be for my boy when he hits 16. He's 14 now, so not much time. I'll get back on the truck as soon as I get the decorations down. No room 'til then.
