Starter is going, gooiinngg, goooooonnnne

Well, I got 147K out of her, but in retrospect, it started over a month ago. I thought I had a set of batteries going south on me about a month ago. I had them tested and they were OK, but not up to snuff, so I replaced them. Had no more problems until Tuesday night. Tried to start it for the first time in two days, and it wouldn't turn over very fast. Added a jump box and it fired. I thought, hummm, one of the battries must be a dud, so I went to have them tested again. Battries tested fine, but then the truck wouldn't turn over at all. Odd part was, it wasn't pulling anything off the battries either. Checked starter relay....OK, checked power wire to starter...OK. Time for a new starter. Shopped around and altough DB Electronics has the best price on a new starter, couldn't wait for the shipping (needed to get the truck home so I know it would be safe). Comparison shopping of local supply houses was intresting. Most were in the $175-$200 range for a reman (all wanted about $180 core charge), but the only one who had a true "as long as you own the truck" warrenty was Auto Zone. The rest were limited lifetime (which means "we replace the first one, and then you are on your own"). I really hated to go with a reman, but it only takes about 20 minutes to replace one and with the lifetime warrenty, at least I won't have to ever pay for another one.

I am amazed at how small the starter is on these trucks. I know they are a gear reduction style, but I am still amazed that it gets the job done.
