My 302 engine is purring but when it is dark, I turned headlights on for a few miles, it dies. I came back the next morning to try again. Bronco started and drove me home without the headlights on. I'm not exactly sure, but i have had a bad light switch(where you turn your lights on) and a bad dimmer switch(i think yours is on the floor) cause a short. They are very inexpensive, you could start there. I think $15 for both at Autozone.
