I seem to have an intermittent electrical problem that I believe stems from the headlight switch. The truck is a 1986 Ford F250 with a 6.9L Diesel and a 4 speed manual transmission. It’s a pretty tired old work truck that I would like to keep running. The reason that I believe that the problem stems from the headlights is because there have been times when I am driving down the road, and when I turn the lights on, the truck dies. I will turn the lights off, let the truck sit for a while, and then be able to start it back up again. I was told that there is a circuit breaker in the electrical system that is likely to have been activated. I assume that it starts up again when the wires cool and the breaker resets itself. In an attempt to fix the problem, I attempted to remove the headlight switch so I could replace it but I couldn’t figure out how to get it out. I couldn’t find any clips holding it in nor could I find and screws or bolts. Any suggestions? What should I be looking for when attempting to remove the switch?
Welcome to FTE. Is your battery and alternator in good shape? Do the headlights turn on ok? I wouldn't pull out the switch yet. You need to find out exactly what makes the truck die first.
