1986 Bronco Electronic Igniton Problem

Hi-
I have a 1986 Ford Bronco XLT with the V8 5.0L 302 Engine. I have recently experenced problems with my Bronco not running, running rough, or missing severly when hot. I took it to a Auto Garage and we went thru the entire fuel system, plugs and plug wires. Nothing helped. We then took it to the Ford dealer and they said it was the electronic ignition. They replaced the module which helped and it seemed to stop. But then it started doing it again. I was wondering, can you change it to a Points system or a different type of electronic ignition? Thanks. Anything would really help.

1986 Bronco Electronic Igniton Problem

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Apr-02 AT 08:28 PM (EST)]Do you have the electronic fuel injection? If so, you can pull the computer codes and it will often tell you the problem.
Give me some more symptoms. Does it run ok when cold and when it first warms up? Does it run bad only when hot? Does your radiator cap hold pressure? What module did the Ford dealer replace?

The EFI is not all that hard once you learn it. It is far superior to points and carb.

My first guess would have been the TFI module. If it was replaced with one that hasn't gone bad, I'd suspect the stator/coil assembly inside the distributor, or possibly the ignition coil. I've had a stator to go out on my '85 302EFI, and it acts just like a bad module. When the electronics heat up (i.e. the engine warms up), the internals of these parts will expand, breaking contact and causing problems. Many times, as they cool down after your truck shuts down, the internal circuitry will again make contact and allow the truck to start and run again, at least until things warm back up. Your ignition system is a good one, stick with it and forget about trying to convert to points, etc. Hang in there, I'm sure you'll track the problem down in short order.
