Transmission Fluid
So I'll be doing scheduled 20,000 mile Transmission fluid change in the sable soon. I'm Debating on what to use. I know chevron makes excellent products, How about there Dexron/Mercron Transmission Fluid Is it A group III Just asking for Some opinions and Facts.
Thanks
Oh ya Merry Christmas
Hope this helps.

On edit: I would stay away from anything that claims both Dextron and Mercon capabilities. I personally just don't think it would work as good as Mercon5.

You see the car has 120,858 miles on it. We had the transmission Replaced at 100,000 miles with on from the ford factory 24,000 warenty. So basically saying it's a new tranny and I want this one to last longer than the last one. So what would be My best bet a Regular mercron like chevron or a full synthetic Mercron like Mobile 1 or mercron V.
Mercon V meets the requirements of Dexron III and meets or exceeds the requirements of Dexron II and Mercon.
Horse puller were did you find this Info ( Just Intrested) and I can put Mercron V in a mercron Requiring Tranny right. So maybe a Brand Like Chevron or Castrol is that a good Idea.

I couldn't cut 'n paste the url from the adobe file. In case you don't have Adobe 6.0, here's what it said:
Havoline Automatic Transmission Fluid MERCON V is
designed specifically for use in Ford Motor Company
transmissions that require a MERCON V fluid. The
enhanced properties of the MERCON V specification
offer premium performance in MERCON or DEXRON-III
applications.
• Always check your owners manual to determine the
proper automatic transmission fluid for your transmission.
• Ford transmissions manufactured before 1977 and
some pre-1982 transmissions require a Type F fluid
such as Havoline ATF Type F.
• Chrysler transmissions manufactured after 1996
require either ATF+3® or ATF+4®3.
Havoline Automatic Transmission Fluid MERCON V
meets or exceeds:
• manufacturer's performance requirements
— Ford MERCON, MERCON V
— General Motors DEXRON-III

I am not an expert, just doing simple maintenance on the side. Please explain. Thanks.
Yes, Mercon V is recommended for use in the AODE/4R70W tranny (all years) due to "shudder" issues, and I'm sure that on a case-by-case basis some Techs might advise customers to use it in order to address a particular issue, but other than that, Ford says NOT to use Mercon V in '96 and earlier trannies.
As I understand it, there is a good reason not to use Mercon V in older ATs. The clutch material prior to '97 in FWD vehicles is not designed for this type of fluid nor its "special" additives. Throw in the already-finicky nature of the AXODE tranny in the '94 Sable and IMHO it's not worth straying from the original spec.
Stick with a good Mercon-rated fluid like Castrol Mercon. If you want synthetic, go with Mobil1 ATF, which is Mercon rated.
Just my .02.

Is tradingden quoting out of his owner's manual? If so, I'm wondering how a manual printed in 1999 would know what specifications Mercon V would meet in 2003.
A new automatic transmission fluid (MERCON V) was introduced in 1997 for use in some Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. This new MERCON V fluid is not used in all applications and is not interchangeable with others transmissions fluids that are currently used. Using the incorrect fluid may cause transmission or transaxle concerns...
....Ford Motor Company uses two automatic transmission fluids in the transmissions now being built. Either MERCON" or MERCON V automatic transmission fluid may be called for, depending on the type of transmission and the year the transmission was built. Although both fluids are excellent, they exhibit different properties and should be used only in the transmission for which they were designed. The vehicle owner and rebuilder should replace fluid with the type printed in the Owner's Guide and on the automatic transmission fluid level indicator. Refer to your Scheduled Maintenance Guide to determine the correct service interval. Failure to use the recommended fluid may affect transmission performanceand durability.
So the distinction between the two fluids is expressly acknowledged by Ford. That is one reason why I am not a fan of those "multi-application" formulas which supposedly cover Dexron, Mercon and Mercon V all in one bottle. Another reason can be found if you search the archives of this forum and locate a thread containing my post describing how I had a less-than-favorable exprerience using a muli-blend ATF product myself (my 5R55E Ranger tranny requires Mercon V).
Ford does not recommend using Mercon V in transmissions prior to some 97 models. The reason given is an incompatability of this fluid with older clutch material. It is believed that this is not a problem with transmissions from 96 on and earlier transmissions that have been rebuilt with all new clutches in recent years.

Well if my Recitanly new reconditioned tranny I got From ford and had a ford dealership install it from 2001 should the material be alright or not.
Maybe just a full synthetic Mercron Like Mobil 1
