This is an informative thread. My son-in-law is a certified GM mechanic and is about to service my auto tranny on my 01 F250 5.4 for the first time at 70K miles. The book says it holds 17.7 qts of Mercon ATF, but my son-in-law says he will only need maybe half of that to service it. I just bought Mobil ATF (not synthetic) that is advertised as meeting both GM fluid requirements and Ford Mercon. Being mindful of comments in this thread critical of this hybrid fluid, it the problem (whatever it is) made worse by mixing the hybrid with what is left in my tranny? So far, the tranny has been fine except for an occasional shudder on upshift that sounds like I'm running over center line markers.
It sounds like your son-in-law is just planning on dropping the pan. You really should do a full flush, replacing the fluid in the torque converter also.....And if your owner's manual calls out Mercon, just use Mercon, not a "generic" like it sounds like you bought......
I just changed my ATF w/Mobil 1, which is Mercon. It was not that hard to drain both the torque converter and drop the transmission pan. This took about 15 1/2 qts to refill my Expedition. My manual states it holds approx. 16 qts. So it was a pretty thorough change. The only place I could find Mobil 1 ATF locally was at Autozone.
Now, FYI, while at Autozone, I also saw that they carried Valvoline synthetic ATF, which was Mercon V.

It's all good. The debate is fun. You got me thinking and I certainly wanted to make sure I did not add something I shouldn't have. I would have never gone to that many manufacturers looking if you had not questioned my post. I certainly know a little more now than I did a 1/2 hour ago.
So I'll be doing scheduled 20,000 mile Transmission fluid change in the sable soon. I'm Debating on what to use. I know chevron makes excellent products, How about there Dexron/Mercron Transmission Fluid Is it A group III Just asking for Some opinions and Facts.
Thanks
Oh ya Merry Christmas
I used Amsoils Synthetic ATF in my truck and it is definatly a very good ATF. Another good one is from synlube - www.synlube.com but more expensive. Shifts crisper and stronger than before. 100,000 mile drain intervals too. With this oil you tranny will definatly last 200k, provided you do not THRASH it on a day to day basis. If you want it to guarantee last past 250k you will need to install some sort of bypass filter on the tranny. Like a Frantz, then your tranny will last indefinitly!
