Transmission Fluid
On the other hand, I will never put Mobil1 ATF in my Ranger tranny because it requires Mercon V, and M1 ATF is not Mercon V rated. So you can see I am very particular about what I use, depending on the age and model of the tranny.

I'm just going to use Mobil 1 's atf. Just out of curiosity were do you purchase your Mobil 1 ATF my local napa doesnt have so I'm just curious.
John, if yours is a rebuild, I think you will probably be OK with Mercon V, but if it were mine, I'd stick with regular Mercon. Personally, I use Mobil1 ATF in my '97 Taurus tranny (same as yours) because (1) it's Mercon rated, (2) I like the idea of a synthetic fluid in there on account of the hight heat being generated, and (3) the longer drain intervals of trannies (25K as opposed to the 3-5K between oil changes).

Bob, thank you very much! Here's wishing you and John and all the rest of the Lube Heads and Ford Freaks around here a very Happy New Year, as well!!

Joe
Thanks
and a happy New Year
I despise my Taurus now...and I urge anybody and everybody that I know to sell their Taurus/Sable if they have one.
One of the primary problems is that they used aluminum pistons in the transmissions instead of their steel counterparts because of cost (13 dollars difference) and because of the change in lubrication abilities-for "performance"- the aluminum expands/contracts alot more in the heat and ends up cracking up...but I'm done ranting. 1991-1995 Taurus? Get rid of it. =P

Thanks! Happy New Year to you, too.
Specs call for 12.25 quarts capacity. So I brought 13 quarts of M1 ATF with me to a local garage with a tranny flush machine and gave them $50 and they used the M1 to flush my system instead of the regular stuff they normally would have used. Worked out pretty good. Also, I did an Auto-Rx treatment right before I had it flushed. Yes, I did notice an improvement.
Just sell your Sable now while it still has value and worth for you to get money out of it.

I was woundeering do you think When My tranny was rebuilt from ford that they upgraded the pistons to steel. You'd think that they would of upgraded other parts to. MY warrenty is almost up on it to 24,000 mile warrenty it cancles at 26,000.
I was just woundering if you or anybody knows if ford would of upgraded to steel pistons
I only know bits and pieces about the AXODE myself, but I beleive that in '94 or '95 Ford started making the these trannies with steel pistons in the forward clutch drum. With that in mind, you have to think that your Ford Factory Rebuild got a steel piston, since the "re-design" has already been around for many years.
You also might try your question in the Transmission Forum, maybe get some feedback there.
1991-1994 ALL had aluminum. If you go on Google you can find ALOT of information on this subject.
Btw...the Jerry referred to was one of FoMoCo's engineers who actually designed the transmission and all that...=). You'll see though...one reason I was concidering finding a 4R70W and converting my 5-speed Mazda over to it with a J-mod and Lincoln Mark VIII Torque Converter...I'd be set for life!
This is an informative thread. My son-in-law is a certified GM mechanic and is about to service my auto tranny on my 01 F250 5.4 for the first time at 70K miles. The book says it holds 17.7 qts of Mercon ATF, but my son-in-law says he will only need maybe half of that to service it. I just bought Mobil ATF (not synthetic) that is advertised as meeting both GM fluid requirements and Ford Mercon. Being mindful of comments in this thread critical of this hybrid fluid, it the problem (whatever it is) made worse by mixing the hybrid with what is left in my tranny? So far, the tranny has been fine except for an occasional shudder on upshift that sounds like I'm running over center line markers.
