E4OD problem
My E4OD is acting up. Cruising along at 60-65 mph, it will suddenly slip into neutral, rev like crazy, then slam back into gear.
My local tranny shop (which has an excellent reputation), says the problem is the clutch in the torque converter, but that it has spread metal debris and my transmissions days are numbered.
They suggest I have them rebuild my transmission, cost $1600.
I don't have a problem spending the money. Overall my Bronco is in excellent condition, and it is much preferable to shopping for a replacement vehicle. This is my third full-size Bronco, I really don't want anything else.
Any comments or suggestions ?
Did the shop drop the pan and inspect for particles? I assume they did since they said there were particles circulating. If there are metal particles circulating, they are correct that the tranny life is limited.
The metal acts like coarse grinding compound and winds up in all the nooks and crannies, grinding away solenoids, gears, clutches etc.
Just gets worse over time, unless you are extremly lucky and a flush fixed it, very unlikely.
$1600 is not a bad price to pay for a rebuild. I have seen less than $1000 and as high as $3000. The price depends on quality, what broke and competition.
I would be nervous about the less than $1000 rebuilds, parts and labor cost something and you can get to the point hwere corners are cut. Also your 94 is in the year range where the E4OD had known weaknesses. A cheap shop may not include all the expensive upgraded components required to overcome the problems with early E4OD. Cheap rebuilders often just rebuild to stock spec. Quality rebuilders use uprated components and include all the factory upgrades and mods, if required.
I had my 94 F250 rebuilt to be "bullet proof" for towing purposes for about $2,500. It included the uprated torque converter, pump, clutches shiftkit etc.
If you let the problem go too long it could cost more since more parts get damaged.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
Change the sensor. It should be around $100 installed, but it isn't hard to do yourself.
