75 460 in a 73 f100. Wiring help needed

I've got this 460 bolted up and turning over, but I'm not sure how to wire the coil and the distributor. I think the engine has the duraspark II system as there are three wires (white, orangish yellow, and purple) coming out of the side of the distributor at the bottom front. The engine that was in it was a 460, but most all of the electrical was unhooked when I got to it and I'm no expert on Ford wiring. This is my first Ford truck and I don't think it has the duraspark setup. It is a 73. I have power to all my lights, CD player, guages, etc., but can't get a spark. I have tested and have found it to have power at the coil when I'm cranking the engine, but there is only 8 volts showing there. There is also power going into the distributor at about 8 volts also through the coil wire. After there I've got no spark. I'm sure this is because I don't have any of the three distributor wires plugged into anything. The rotor is turning.

Help would be very much appreciated!!!

Check another 75-79 vehicle and see where the wires go for the duraspark. Or a Chiltons book might have the wiring diagrams. Make sure your coil is good, might have to swap on a known good one.

Physical appearance of module?

That is a great link. What does the module look like physically? I have a 78 Bronco for parts that looks like it has a Duraspark setup. The wiring harness looks that way anyway. There is no engine in it. I just need to know what the module looks like so I can see if it is still there.

Thanx!

It's an aluminum looking box. It should have the same color wires coming out of it that is stated in the diagram in the link above. If it has blue plastic where the wires come out, grab it. If it's some other color, I think I would pass on it.

got one

I just went to NAPA and bought a new module. I have the wiring harness on the Bronco that I am about to remove. I'll keep you posted. Thanx for the responses!

Got another question

I've got the parts of the harnesses that I need. I am ready to hook up everything. The question I have comes from this part of the about link to rangerstation: "Only one new connection is required. The module receives its power through the red wire in the 2-pin connector. This must come from the key switch terminal that is "hot in start or run". If your car has an idle positioner solenoid, the wire powering that may be used to power the module."

Is the idle positioner solenoid the plunger outfit with one wire going into that pushes on the accelerator linkage? If so, the engine I have does have that, but I don't know where the wire is for it that comes from the truck. Does anyone know where that wire comes from on a !973 F100 4X4 automatic? It would be easier than trying to find the right wire from the ignition. If there is no wire for the idle positioner solenoid on my pickup, does anyone know which wire is the "hot in start or run" wire from the key switch? I don't have a key for it yet, so I can'y test it. The key should be made by the beginning of next week.

Thanx!

I don't think you are going to find a pure 12 volt switched source in the engine bay. There will be one for the coil, I think it's red/green, but it's not 12 volts. It will be fed by the resistor. I would run the red module wire through the firewall and hook it in the fuse box, or on the ignition switch. If you don't have a key, it doesn't sound like you are going to get very far. If you want to just try it, run the red wire over and hot wire it to the battery when you want to try the engine out.

Well I ran the white wire from the module to the "I" terminal of the starter relay, this is hot in start only which is what the white wire needs.
The red wire I ran thru the firewall and tapped into the red/green striped wire on the ignition switch, which is hot in run.
Seems to work fine

It's alive!

I started the 460 tonight! Pretty exciting. It only runs when I have my jumper button pushed. Consequently the starter also must be turning. This should be cured once I get a key made for the ignition. I ran a wire directly to the positive battery terminal from the red wire on the module. My next project will be finding the wire to tap into on the ignition switch. I'll try the red/green striped one first. Thanx Sparky! This board is great. Thanx for the help! If you have any other help, suggestions, or things to look for, please let me know.
