Spark Plug Replacement

Can anyone think of any reason to replace the plugs at 60,000 instead of 100,000. My engine idles like a Mercedes, and I have no hesitation or spark knock, not even the hint of any lack in performance and no hesitation. In other words, I think if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Plus I understand that if they are not done absolutely correctly, the plugs have a tendancy to blow out of the heads. I just would rather make the $350 outlay a little later if I can. I am sitting on 57,400 right now, and like I said, the plugs seem to be in new shape. Just wondering what you guys thought? Thanks

Depends on how you drive it really I guess. I drive the crap outta mine, and shouldn't wait til 60,000, but it's worked so far.

I recently changed the plugs in my V10 @ 74,000 miles, and although they were not bad, they would have been by 100,000 miles if I had waited for the advertised "tune-up" interval to change them.

Relax. I had no perormance issues at all by waiting to 100K to replace the stokc plugs, and replaced them with Motorcraft like the originals. Some have gone to 150K on the same plugs, but I like to do preventive maintenance so I never have break downs in the boondocks.

If you get an occasional miss or economy falls, before 100K, it may mean you are not driving it hard enough to burn out the carbon build up. If so, pop it in second gear, get out on the highway and run it up to 4K rpm for ten minutes or so. That will help keep them like new.

If you change the now, or at least loosten them up now, they will be less likey to corrode into the head. Also, if you do it yourself, it only costs you 15 for plugs. There is a how-to article on this site. They only blow out of the block on the earlier model trucks, and thats because of a design flaw in the head.

I just did a plug change on my "97" and it wasn't a pleasant expirence. Hope I don't need to do it again for another 108K miles. I used the OEM MotorCraft at $8.50 per plug cause I didn't want to tackle that jab again for a while. Not a job for the first time mechanic, 8 hrs begining to end with a two hour delay for a 6.8 Magnitude earthquake here on the central coast of Calif. that nearly knocked me off my feet.
I would recommend reading the Tech Tip post on changing the plugs on the 4.6L/5.4L as it was very helpful. Good Luck
