Question Which rear end?

I have a REALLY stupid question:
On my 88 Bronco, how can I tell which rear end is on it? From what I gather it could either be the 8.8" or the 9". I want to put a mini-spool in, but of course I need to know which one it is first.

Also, wanted to say hi. I didn't see a noob section so I hope this isn't like Pirate BB where someone new to the forum must be segregated off or else bear the full on flames of the "old timers". But from what I've seen of this forum, it looks like you are all really helpful with each other.

I got this Bronco from my sister after she broke the H/L in the Tcase. I just finished rebuilding that last month. Have got a set of 33's on it for now and have just started cutting out the fenders. Other than that it's bone stock 351W MPFI with the TTS no lift...yet. Haven't decided yet if I want to lift the TTS or change out to a solid axel first.

Anyway, appreciate any help on IDing the axel I can get. Haven't had much experience with Fords up ‘til now, but I expecting that to change rapidly.

Thanks.

Simple answer, 8.8 has a rear cover that you pull off to get access to the gears, 9" has a pumpkin that you unbolt and pull out from the front that contains the diff and gears.
I think all the 88 Bronco's used an 8.8.

The 9" spicer axles were faised out in 83, spicer stopped building the axle about 80 or 81 and ford used them up in there stock, and they ran out about mid 83.

Also, putting a spool out back is not recomended beacause then you lose the point of haveing a diff. Are you useing this truck for offroad only or street driven? If you drive a spool on the street and take turns, you risk breaking the c-clips that hold the axles or the axles themselves. Thats the only weakness of the 8.8, they use c-clips to hold the axles in.

Hope this all helps.

Cool, thanks. For what I want to do I'd rather deal with a cover than the solid pumpkin. I'll have a look at it and see.

BroncoRoadKill:
Right now I'm just messing around with it. In a couple of months (once I get a tube bumper fabbed up for the front) I'll get it inspected and licensed for road at which point I'll take the spool out. (which is why I'd rather have the 8.8 at this point). A friend of mine does this with his '77 OB with a full spool after breaking three spools and two third members, he just puts it in when he is just going to play around with it off road (which is most of the time now after his lift). He has a pit in his garage, so taking it in and out isn't a huge deal.

Thanks for the info guys!

Well, I was going by what I know, some factories may have had extra 9" left.

You could look into a locker, then you would not have to worry about taking it in and out. They do cost alot, but they are very nice.

The nice thing about the 9" is the fact you can pull the third member and take it to a gear shop to upgrade it or swap out a spare. There are a lot of goodies out there for the 9" also.

There is supposed to be an Aussie Locker out sometime in the near future for the rear 8.8. I don't know how much it will cost but the one for the Dana 44 front is $199 and they are a drop in like the Detroits EZ-Locker (~$279) and PowerTraxx's LockRight (~$240) and No-Slip lockers (~$420). If you aren't goint to be using over 33" tires (maybe 35s) these will work o.k.

P.S. Spools are illegal to use on the highway in many states. I don't know how they would be able to tell, but in the event of an accident a "sharp" investigator start snooping into the cause or witch hunting.
