Idle Problem

1981 Bronco 302.

Truck is in like new condition, but just recently and abruptly started having problems idling.

Let off the gas pedal and within a few seconds it'll die. Runs great so long as the gas pedal isn't fully released.

Tried replacing PCV valve. No improvement.

What should I focus on next?

Well everyone will say try cleaning the IAC sensor and pull the codes first which is what should be done anyway. You could have a bad TP sensor also.

As for me I have a random stalling problem like yours but the engine will search first by stumbling and then it may stall or keep on running. I seem to have more trouble when the motor is cold. I have changed everything but the computer with no luck yet.

Alright, now. I dont know if you can pull codes concidering you dont have a computer, unless you have a diff engine or a swap, and since you didnt have a computer means its prolly carb b/c I dont think they offered EFI untill 85 or 86 for the 5.0 and 88 for the 5.8 which means you dont have a throttle body which also means you dont have a Throttle Position Sensor I dont know what the hell the IAC sensor is. sorry for the confusion. and anyone else that knows what the IAC sensor is, chime in am help him.

thank you, Charlie

Yep. It's a stock '81. No computers involved. No electronic sensors. Lots of vacuum lines and hoses. Thermactor air system looks to be in good shape, but currently has no belt to drive it. I don't think it had one when I got the truck and it was running great. Should I get the Tmermactor air system going again? Could the EGR valve be at fault for the truck's inability to idle?

My other trucks, BII's, all have computers so this retro truck seems just a bit alien to me. Looks and sounds awesome, though...looks like it just came of the dealer lot both inside and out.

I have a 78 bronco that had the same trouble
I found the EGR ports cloged up I cleaned them
up its run good since. Its worth a try its easy to get to

P.S. IAC is (Idle Air Control) my 97 has one I've replaced
